OREM, Utah -- The Utah Valley University volleyball team will play its final non-conference matches this week when it hosts Southern Utah Tuesday and Boise State Wednesday, the matches will also begin a six-match home stand. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. in the Activity Center and both will be televised live locally on UVU-TV (Comcast Ch. 17).
The Wolverines (13-9, 4-2 GWC) have been hot as of late as they have won four of their last five. UVU's lone loss during the stretch was to BYU at home on Oct. 9, in front of the largest volleyball crowd in UVU school history, 2,206. Last week the Wolverines traveled to Texas and came away with two conference sweeps, one at Texas-Pan American and the other Houston Baptist.
Senior Kayli Doxey had a big week for UVU offensively last week as she tallied 27 kills, 4.50 kills per set and hit .393. In UVU's win over UTPA last Thursday, Doxey hit at a near unheard of percentage of .684.
The Thunderbirds will enter Tuesday's contest with an 11-8 record and a 9-2 mark in the Summit League. SUU has also been playing well as of late as its won six straight decisions. The Thunderbirds and Wolverines previously met-up this season back on Sept. 21, in Cedar City. In that match, UVU came away with a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-17, 25-22).
SUU has never previously beaten the Wolverines as UVU is 3-0 against them. UVU has also not yet lost a set to the T-Birds.
The Broncos will come to Orem on Wednesday with a 17-6 overall record and a 4-4 clip in the WAC. The 17 victories for BSU is its most wins in a season since 2004. Earlier in the season, Boise State had a 10-match win-streak but as of late the Broncos have alternated wins and losses in its past eight matches. BSU and UVU played up in Boise on Sept. 7 earlier this season and the Broncos came away with a 3-0 decision in the match (25-17, 25-23, 25-23).
UVU still holds a commanding 6-2 advantage all-time against the Broncos. The Wolverines are also a perfect 3-0 vs. BSU in Orem.
Following this week's action UVU will remain at home and will be looking for some retribution when it hosts GWC foes South Dakota Oct. 28 and North Dakota Oct. 30.
