Volleyball Never Trails in Second Straight Sweep

Oct. 7, 2010

OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley women's volleyball team defeated conference opponent Chicago State 3-0 (25-7, 25-6, 25-16) Thursday night at the Activity Center. Senior Kayli Doxey turned in another great performance, totaling 11 kills while only playing two sets. The Wolverines never trailed in the match.

"I'm very proud of the effort," said UVU head coach Sam Atoa. "This is a very challenging match for us to play. We have to keep building momentum for the next match."

Before the Cougars (0-20, 0-5) could call their first timeout, UVU (11-8, 2-2) had opened up the first set with a 13-5 run. The Wolverines finished off the set by scoring 12 of the final 14 points and won it 25-7. The UVU defense only gave up one kill during the set, while junior Chelsey Heaps had six kills of her own.

The Wolverines kept their momentum going into the second set. After starting out on an 8-1 run, UVU coasted to a 25-6 finish. Junior Rachel Anderson supported the potent Wolverine attack with six assists and sophomore Erica Nish had six kills.

The third set was a little closer than the earlier ones, but UVU was on its game and capped off its second sweep in a row with a 25-16 final set win over the Cougars. Anderson had 15 assists and often found her teammate Doxey, who helped finish off Chicago State with six kills in the set.

Anderson finished with a match-high 21 assists to go along with a serving ace. Freshman Patti Flag worked hard on the UVU back line tallying a match-high eight digs.

The Wolverines will next play host to in-state rival BYU on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Activity Center. Next week UVU will head back out on to the road for conference clashes against Texas-Pan American and Houston Baptist. The games will be played on Thursday at 6 p.m. MT and Saturday at 1 p.m. MT respectively.

"BYU, like other in-state schools, brings out the best in you," added Atoa. "The kids are excited to get ready to play. It's a huge match for us obviously and we are excited for the opportunity to get back on the court."

Saturday's match against BYU will be Hometown Hero Night for senior outside hitter Kayli Doxey. Fans from Arizona get in for just $1 and fans from Kayli's hometown of Gilbert get in for FREE (show your ID at the ticket table). The first 200 fans will receive a Kayli Doxey Hometown Hero poster.
