Great West Conference Tournament Bracket

OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University volleyball team will be looking for its first Great West Volleyball Championship this weekend in Chicago, when it heads to the conference championships that will be hosted by Chicago State University.

UVU finished second in the GWC this season with a 9-3 conference record and clinched the No. 2 seed for the tournament on the final day of the regular-season. The Wolverines will open up against the team they just faced a week ago in the winless Chicago State Cougars (0-32, 0-12) Friday evening at 6 p.m. MT on their home court. UVU swept the Cougars last Saturday and leads the all-time series 7-0.

The Wolverines wrapped up the regular-season with a 20-10 overall record. The 20-win season marked the second consecutive 20 or more win season and the third in the past four years. UVU also won nine of its final 10 regular-season matches.

North Dakota enters the GWC Tournament as the No. 1 seed, followed by UVU, South Dakota, Houston Baptist, Texas-Pan American, NJIT and Chicago State.

The conference tournament will be single-elimination format. If UVU can get past Chicago State, the Wolverines will then play the winner of the South Dakota (No. 3 seed) vs. NJIT (No. 6 seed) match in the semifinals on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. MT. The Great West tournament championship will then take place Sunday at 11 a.m. MT.

South Dakota finished the regular season with a 8-4 conference record, which was good enough for third place. USD and UVU split a pair of matches on the year and UVU holds the all-time series advantage at 3-1.

The NJIT Highlanders will enter the conference tournament with a 4-21 overall record and a 2-10 GWC clip. UVU was a perfect 2-0 against NJIT, which included a 3-0 sweep last week in Newark. The Wolverines lead the all-time series 5-1.

If UVU can make it to the championship match on Sunday, they will most likely face last year's champs, the undefeated in conference North Dakota Fighting Sioux. The Sioux beat UVU both times on the season and finished the year with a 12-0 conference record and 23-5 overall clip.
