OREM, Utah -- The Utah Valley University volleyball team will play its final two regular season matches this week whe it plays at Great West Conference foes NJIT Thursday at 5:00 p.m. MT in Newark, N.J., and at the winless Chicago State Cougars for a Saturday matinee in the Windy City (1:00 p.m. MT).
The Wolverines (18-10, 7-3) moved into a tie for second place in the GWC standings with South Dakota by beating both Houston Baptist (25-12, 25-14, 22-25, 25-18) and Texas-Pan American (26-24, 25-19, 25-20) last week. Last Friday against UTPA it was also Senior Night in Orem as UVU honored four of the best four-year letterwinners to ever put on the Wolverine Green in Kayli Doxey, Lanni O'Reilly, Dani Robison and Kathleen Stevens.
Utah Valley will have the opportunity to control its own destiny this week and is guaranteed at least a share of second place in the GWC as it holds an identical 7-3 conference record as South Dakota. While UVU will be taking on NJIT and Chicago State, the Coyotes will play at UTPA and HBU this weekend.
The NJIT Highlanders will enter Thursday's conference match with a 4-20 overall record and a 2-9 GWC mark. The Highlanders two conference victories have both come against the GWC basement-dweller Chicago State. The Highlanders will enter Thursday on a nine-match losing streak. NJIT is led offensively by Baaba Hughes and Janet Snell who each have 232 and 213 kills respectively. The Wolverines previously defeated the Highlanders earlier this season in three sets back in the conference opener on Sept. 16. UVU leads the all-time series advantage 4-1.
The winless Chicago State Cougars, 0-30 overall and 0-11 in conference, will play its final two matches of the regular season by hosting Valparaiso Nov. 9 and UVU on Saturday. The Cougars have not won a match since the 2007 season as they are 0-87 during that span. CSU is led offensively by Valeria Desiderio and Mazvita Maziveyi who have 184 and 153 kills respectively. UVU is a perfect 6-0 all-time against the Cougars.
Following this weeks action, the Wolverines will prepare for their first Great West Conference crown when they participate in the Great West Championships in Chicago, Ill., Nov. 19-21.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Utah Valley's Kayli Doxey and South Dakota's Carol Logato have been named Great West Conference Volleyball Players of the Week after outstanding performances last week, helping their respective teams move into a tie for second-place in the conference. The awards were announced Tuesday by the league office.
Doxey, a senior from Gilbert, Ariz., received the offensive honor after leading the Wolverines to two Great West Conference victories last week. The outside hitter helped her team defeat HBU and UTPA by recording 35 kills in the two wins while hitting at .389 and averaging 5.00 kills per set. She also added three service aces and three blocks in her final home matches of her four-year career in a Wolverine uniform.
The defensive award went to Logato after helping the Coyotes to GWC wins over NJIT and Chicago State and a non-conference win over in-state rival South Dakota State. The junior libero from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, posted 59 digs in the three matches, including 28 at SDSU. Logato averaged 4.92 digs per set in the three contests.
Others nominated for the offensive award were Erin Joki (North Dakota), Kristin Kritenbrink (South Dakota) and Marci Logan (Texas-Pan American), while the defensive nominees included Ronni Munkeby (North Dakota), Kaitlin Vasquez (Texas-Pan American) and Kathleen Stevens (Utah Valley).
The honor is Doxey's fourth of the season and seventh of her career.
