OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University's wrestling team will host its final home contest of the season Friday at 5 p.m. in the Shurian Family Activity Center, as the Wolverines (8-3, 2-1) will take on conference foe South Dakota State (1-9-1, 0-3). It will also be senior night/hometown hero night for UVU, as the Wolverines will recognize lone senior Jeffrey Newby (141-lbs.).
The dual will be televised locally on UVU-TV with Michael Clapier calling the play-by-play and former UVU wrestler Sam Allen on the color. You can also watch a live web stream of the broadcast on WolverineGreen.com by CLICKING HERE
Last weekend the Wolverines picked up their biggest win in school history as they upset the No. 8 Boise State Broncos at home, 22-20. In that matchup, UVU sophomore 174-pounder Brad Darrington had the biggest win of the night as he defeated the Broncos' Nate Lee (ranked 11th) by decision, 7-6, to put UVU in up by the score of 19-11. Benjamin Kjar (125, ranked No. 11), Flint Ray (133), Jeb Clark (165), and Josh Wood (197) all also picked up wins for UVU in the victory over Boise State.
Utah Valley also set another school record last weekend, as the wrestling team became the first sport in school history to take on a No. 1 ranked opponent. On Saturday, UVU locked heads with the Iowa Hawkeyes in Vernal, Utah. In that match, the Wolverines lost six close decisions and fell to the two-time defending National Champion Hawkeyes, 38-0.
The Wolverines will be looking to improve to 3-1 in conference Friday as South Dakota State comes in with a winless Western Wrestling Conference record (0-3). SDSU has not won since Nov. 28, when it defeated Cumberland, 30-12, at the Hoosier Duals.
The Jacks are led by senior 197-pounder Tyler Sorenson who is 23-5 on the year and 9-2 in duals. Dustin Walraven (141) is a close second as he holds an 18-10 clip on the year.
UVU leads the all-time series with SDSU, 3-1.
Following this Friday's dual, Utah Valley will conclude its regular season at Northern Colorado on Feb. 17. Following the dual with UNCo, the Wolverines will compete at the NCAA West Regional/WWC Championships for the first time on March 6, in Brookings, S.D.
