May 16, 2010

Box Score

DALLAS - Utah Valley remained alive in the Great West Conference Softball Tournament Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over Houston Baptist.

The Wolverines (28-30) dropped to the loser's bracket earlier in the day after being upset 4-2 by No. 4-seed North Dakota.

Sophomore righthander Jessica Martin twirled a gem for the Wolverines in picking up her ninth win of the season. She allowed just two runs on five hits, while striking out three and walking two.

"Kudos to Jessica Martin," UVU softball coach Todd Fairbourne said. "It was huge for us for her to throw the complete game."

Meghan Woodworth went 2-for-3 with a homer and Jessica Anderson belted a solo homer and Cherylyn McGraw and Megan Gardner, who had two hits, each drove in runs in the UVU win.

Woodworth set the table in the first with a leadoff double. Charlee Cisneros followed with an infield single, and Gardner grounded out to drive in UVU's first run of the game.

Two innings later, McGraw drove in her run and Gardner scored on an HBU error to increase the lead to 3-0.

After Anderson homered in the fourth, the Huskies scored their first run of the contest. Woodworth homered to left in the sixth and HBU scored a run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Wolverines continue play Monday at 10 a.m. CDT against the loser of South Dakota/North Dakota. All tournament games can be heard live through the Texas Sports Radio Network with Terry Lewis providing play-by-play by logging on to http://www.tsrnsports.com/Broadcast/Broad-U-HBUwomen.htm.
