OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University's women's volleyball team didn't waste any time getting their first conference win of the season, defeating the NJIT Highlanders 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-15) on Thursday night.
"Our goal is to win the conference," said UVU coach Sam Atoa. "With these conference matches, every match is very important, particularly the ones at home, and we need to take care of them."
After falling into an early 10-7 hole in the first set of the conference opener, UVU (6-5, 1-0) rebounded to win it 25-21 thanks in part to six kills from senior Kayli Doxey.
In the second set, the Wolverines went back and forth with the Highlanders early on (1-9, 0-1) but in the end only allowed five kills in the set and capped it off with a 19-9 run.
UVU jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the final set and never looked back as the early run would be all the momentum it would need to put the match away.
Doxey led the Wolverines with 12 kills and freshman Brookelyn Campbell, who has averaged at least six assists per set in her last eight matches, totaled 30 assists for the night. The win is the fourth straight for UVU after sweeping all three of its matches at the Arizona State Invitational last weekend.
"We had some great momentum winning the ASU tournament," added Atoa. "Great teams take advantage of that momentum and we want to be able to extend that into tomorrow and Saturday."
The Wolverines will now head up to Logan, to participate in the Utah State Invitational this weekend. There, UVU will face UC Riverside (Fri. at 12:30 p.m.), host Utah State (Fri. at 7 p.m.) and Loyola Marymount (Sat. at 10 a.m.).
