Wolverines Sweep T-Birds to Remain Unbeaten Against SUU

Sept. 21, 2010

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Utah Valley's women's volleyball team continued its hot play as of late Tuesday evening in Cedar City, by sweeping Southern Utah (25-17, 25-15, 25-22). The victory marked the Wolverines (9-6) ninth in their last 11 matches.

"The girls played very well," UVU head coach Sam Atoa said. "We came out and disrupted their offense and they just really couldn't get anything going early. I was very proud of the girls, for sticking to the game plan and really making it work."

UVU didn't waste any time getting out to an early lead in the match as they scored the first eight points in set number one. Later in the set following a kill from the reigning Great West Conference Offensive Player of the Week senior Kayli Doxey the Wolverines went up 21-9. UVU went on to win the first set 25-17.

The second set was more of the same as the Wolverines broke ahead and doubled up the T-Birds (5-7) on the scoreboard at 10-5, 12-6 and 14-7. UVU then worked its largest lead of the set to 10 at 19-9. SUU tried to get back in it on its home court but the Wolverines advantage held strong as UVU won the second set by 10.

With the Wolverines in front 10-5 in the final set, the Thunderbirds got going as they scored seven of the next nine points to tie it at 12-all. SUU then did all it could to stay alive in the match when it took a late 21-20 lead. UVU immediately countered though by scoring five of the next six points to complete the sweep.

Doxey and senior Chelsey Heaps once again led UVU offensively in the match as they both finished in double figures in kills with 15 (a match-high) and 11 respectively. Doxey also hit at a .464 percentage, while Heaps was close behind at .360. Heaps also tallied a double-double in the win, as she added 11 digs.

Freshman Brookelyn Campbell, senior Kathleen Stevens and senior Dani Robison all had solid performances as well as they all posted match-highs in their respective categories. Campbell had the high in assists with 29, Stevens led the way in digs with 19 and Robison was the night's top blocker with five.

With tonight's win, the Wolverines improve their all-time NCAA Div. I record against SUU to 3-0. The two squads will meet-up one more time this season when they lock heads in Orem on Oct. 19.

UVU will now have a nine day layoff. After the break, the Wolverines will return to conference play when they travel to the Dakotas to take on South Dakota (Sept. 30) and North Dakota (Oct. 2).

"Our girls deserve some time off and rarely do you have a weekend off," Atoa added. "They have done very well and are very deserving of this break. Hopefully they can come back focused for our most important conference road trip of the season when we head to the Dakotas next week."
