No. 21 Texas Tech Hands UVU Softball an 8-3 Loss Saturday Afternoon

LUBBOCK, Texas - After a win over Bryant earlier in the day, the Utah Valley softball team lost an 8-3 game to No. 21 Texas Tech Saturday afternoon at the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock.

The loss dropped the Wolverines to 1-6, while Texas Tech remains unbeaten with a perfect 9-0 record following the win.

The Red Raiders took an early 5-0 advantage over the Wolverines as they scored one run in the first, three in the second and one in the third.

UVU pushed a run across in the fourth inning to avoid the shutout. Deianna Russell doubled with two outs and Samantha Telarroja followed with a single to advance her to third. Russell then managed to score on a double steal.

With Texas Tech on top 8-1, the Wolverines scored their second run of the game in the sixth inning. Meghan Yocom doubled to start the inning and Amanda Perez plated her with an RBI single to center field.

The game marked the first time of the season that the Wolverines did not score a run in the first inning as they had in each of their previous six.

Perez leads UVU on the season in RBIs as she already has 16 in just seven games played.

Josi Summers, who picked up her first win of the season against Bryant earlier in the day, started in the circle and allowed the first four runs. Kyli Flanary came on in relief in the third and was charged with three of the final four runs.

Utah Valley will conclude play at the Texas Tech Invitational Sunday at 11 a.m. MT when the Wolverines take on the Red Raiders for the third time of the weekend.
