Box Score

PROVO, Utah - Utah Valley took an early 3-0 lead over BYU Tuesday night at Gail Miller Field but the Cougars (25-15) countered with seven unanswered runs to defeat the Wolverines (12-22) 7-3.

"I really felt like the girls were in the game for the whole time and I was happy with both pitchers efforts," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "We just need to learn how to play seven full innings at the game's highest level. They (BYU) are a good team and overall I'm happy with how we played against them tonight."

The Wolverines wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they scored two runs in the top of the first. UVU loaded the bases with just one out as Samantha Telarroja, Amanda Robinson and Amanda Perez all reached base. Deianna Russell then stepped up and gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout. Maggie Christianson then plated the second run with a single to third that scored Robinson.

After UVU's starting pitcher Kyli Flanary retired the Cougars in order in the bottom of the first, the Wolverines pushed across another run in the second to extend their lead to 3-0. Telarroja started it with a two-out triple to left and Mandy Tapia scored her with an RBI single that deflected off of a diving Krista Hicks' glove at shortstop.

With UVU still on top by three runs, BYU answered in the bottom of the second as Carly Duckworth delivered a two-out two-run home run to cut the score to 3-2.

The Cougars then scored another run in the third to tie the game at 3-all.

With the game tied both teams went to the bullpen in the fourth. Josi Summers came on for the Wolverines and the Cougars managed to score three runs off of her as BYU took its first lead of the game at 6-3.

The game remained 6-3 until the sixth when BYU added to its lead as Madisen Robb delivered a pinch-hit solo home run to put the Cougars on top 7-3.

BYU's Tori Almond came on in relief and shut down the Wolverines offense as she pitched four innings of no-hit ball. Almond was credited with the win, while Summers took the loss as she gave up four runs in three innings of work.

The Wolverines and Cougars will play each other again on May 3, when BYU comes will visit Wolverine Field.

Telarroja had a nice game replacing injured Meghan Yocom in the leadoff spot as the shortstop went 1-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored. Tapia, Robinson, Perez and Christianson all each finished with a hit apiece for the Wolverines.

UVU will now return home to the newly renovated Wolverine Field for the first time of the 2011 season when PCSC-rival Northern Colorado comes to town for a four-game series on Friday and Saturday. If the field is not ready the games will be moved to Spanish Fork's High School field.
