FARMERS BRANCH, Texas-- The Utah Valley University softball team won the Great West Conference cluster Sunday with a 5-1 record in three days with 2-1 and 4-3 victories over Houston Baptist.

With the wins, the Wolverines improve to 18-6-1 for the year.

"We did a good job. We're showing spurts that our bats are going to come back," UVU softball coach Todd Fairbourne said. "As it has been defined, we are showing we are a solid pitching team with solid defense and we're coming up with big hits. We're going to win games if we continue to do that."

The Wolverines turned to the long ball in each victory.

In Game 1, Krystin Jachim belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to lead the Wolverines to the one-run victory.

Tiffany Mills improved to 10-4 on the year with the complete-game six hitter.

Mills worked out of a jam in the second when Houston Baptist had runners on first and second with one out, but they were unable to push across a run.

HBU pushed across the first run of the game on the fourth after a lead-off triple and a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom half of the frame, Jachim belted the game-winner.

Jessica Uresti and Jamie North had two hits each for the Wolverines.

In Game 2, Uresti drilled a three-run homer in the top of the fifth to give the Wolverines the 3-0 lead.

HBU plated two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to knot the score at 3-3.

North, however, homered in the top of the seventh, and Mills came in with two outs and two on in the bottom of the seventh and shut down the Huskies for her fifth save of the year.

Megan Peay, in relief of starter Cassie Herrera, improved to 4-1 with the win in 1 2/3 innings of work.

The Wolverines, who have won eight of their last nine games, open a 12-game homestand when they host UMKC for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. They then open PCSC action at 12:00 p.m. Friday against defending champion Portland State.
