OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley University women's soccer team wrapped up regular season play with a 2-0 loss to WAC-leader Seattle U on Saturday at Clyde Field.
Â
With the setback, Utah Valley (12-6-2, 7-3-0) finishes third in the WAC standings and will be the No. 3 seed at next week's WAC Tournament. Seattle U (12-4-2, 8-1-1) secures itself the No. 1 seed at the tournament with the victory.
Â
The Redhawks scored both of their goals in the first 2:39 of the match. SU's first score came just 40 seconds into the game as Stephanie Verdoia sent the ball into the upper 90 on the right side of the net after receiving a touch pass from Taylor Ritzman.
Â
Just two minutes later, Ritzman rebounded a Julia Moravec shot and sent the ball into the back of the net to give the Redhawks a 2-0 advantage they would not relinquish.
Â
"Seattle is a very good team," said Utah Valley head coach
Brent Anderson. "To come out and put ourselves into a literal hole just 40 seconds into the match and then even a bigger hole just a two minutes later didn't start us off right. We had a difficult time developing a rhythm."
Â
Kassandra Anderson led the Wolverines with two shots on the day.
Taylor Kirk,
McKell Salmon and
Kim Stratford each tallied one.
Jessica Duffin played all 90 minutes in goal and tallied seven saves.
Â
Utah Valley now preps for the WAC Tournament next week in Seattle, Wash. The third-seeded Wolverines will take on No. 6 seed Texas-Pan American on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 8:30 p.m. PT.
Â
"Now we move forward," Anderson said. "We know exactly where we sit as we head into the WAC Tournament. We know the job in front of us. We will now get focused and ready to go."
