CHENEY, Wash.-
Zach Nelson led Utah Valley with 12 points and
Jaden Jackson added 10 in a 75-50 loss to Eastern Washington Monday night at Reese Court. The game marks the start of seven straight road games for the Wolverines.
Â
Eastern Washington (2-0) got off to a quick start, taking a 15-2 lead to open the game. Utah Valley (1-1) did cut the EWU lead to just eight points late in the first half, but couldn't get any closer as Eastern Washington then used a 15-3 run in the second half to secure the win.
Â
"Eastern Washington is a very good team," said Utah Valley head coach
Dick Hunsaker. "They did some things against us that got them off to a fast start. We were able to get ourselves back in the game in the first half but they seemed to make timely baskets and we seemed to make timely errors."
Â
Nelson scored his 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, including a 2-for-3 clip from three-point range. Nelson also tallied four rebounds and a block in the setback. Jackson hit 4-of-9 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc for his 10 points. Jackson also dished out a season-high seven assists.
Â
Mitch Bruneel,
Brenden Evans and
Marcel Davis each scored seven points. Bruneel also had six rebounds.
Â
Tyler Harvey led four Eastern Washington players in double figures with a game-high 18 points.
Â
EWU shot an impressive 54.5 percent (30-for-55) in the game and hit 11 three-point field goals. The Eagles held Utah Valley to a 35.2 percent clip from the field on the night.
Â
"We'll learn from this and move on and move forward," Hunsaker said. "We will continue to learn more about our team and what we need to do to put ourselves in better positions to be successful. Things aren't going to come easy for us. Hopefully as a group we can band together and make an effort in unity as one to pull us through some games on this tough road stretch."
Â
Utah Valley continues play on the road Saturday at Southern Utah. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (MT).
