Utah Valley women's basketball drops contest at San Francisco 69-50

SAN FRANCISCO—The Utah Valley University women's basketball team dropped a Saturday afternoon contest at San Francisco 69-50, to fall to 3-4 in the young season. Patrice Toston led the Wolverines with 15 points while the Dons' (6-1) were led by Taylor Proctor with 20 points.

"My hope coming into this trip was that we could pick up a win, so I was disappointed, but the overall goal was to get experience and grow," said Cathy Nixon.  "We started this game with more intensity than we did the game on Wednesday, and the difference tonight was turnovers. We had 18 turnovers and it's hard to win any game, especially on the road, when you turn the ball over that much."

USF used a 20-3 run in the second half to pull away. The spurt lasted over eight minutes with a Toston layup and free throw, accounting for the only Wolverine points over that time.

The run was kicked off by a free throw from Taj Winston and was continued with eight points by Proctor.

Toston drilled a three pointer with 2:57 left in the opening frame before USF closed the half with an 8-0 run to lead 33-23 at the half.

Down 10 early in the second half, Rebecca MaWhinney knocked down a three pointer to make it a 35-28 game before the Dons' decisive run.

Utah Valley will next play Southern Utah at home on Tuesday Dec. 2. SUU is coached by former UVU assistant coach Chris Boettcher. Boettcher was Nixon's assistant for eight seasons before a stint at BYU and one season coaching a men's professional team in Japan. The game tips off at 7 p.m. in the UCCU Center.
