OREM, Utah – Behind a 20 point night from
Mitch Bruneel, Utah Valley University picked up its most lopsided win of the year, 83-50, over Bristol University on Tuesday night at the UCCU Center.
Bruneel was 8-for-13 from the field and also hauled in eight rebounds, with the Wolverines (5-8) holding a decisive 51-25 edge on the glass.
Eli Robison grabbed a career-best seven rebounds while
Zach Nelson and
Chad Ross each pulled down six boards. All 13 players on the active roster saw action in the game.
"There were a variety of combinations on the court and I thought we hustled and was pleased with our effort on the backboards," said UVU head coach
Dick Hunsaker. "It was good to get a lot of court time for the entire roster. We still need to do a better job of taking care of the basketball consistently."
Trailing 12-10 eight minutes into the game, the Wolverines scored 21 of the game's next 25 points, which started with a 3-pointer from
Jaden Jackson. Jackson's trey began a quick 7-0 spurt and, after a Bristol bucket, UVU ran off nine straight points with four coming from
Brenden Evans.
The run, during with Utah Valley was 9-of-12 from the field, gave the Wolverines a 31-16 lead. UVU led 40-24 at the half behind 56.7 percent shooting.
The lead was 17, 58-41, before a 9-1 spurt during a three-minute span extended the lead to 67-42, a 25-point advantage that was capped by
Donte Williams dunk.
Williams scored 13 while Jackson added nine and
Zach Nelson had eight points. Evans, Robison and Ross each scored six while
Darrious Hamilton finished with four points and four boards and
Marcel Davis contributed four points and six assists.
Tade Keshishyan led the Bears with 12 points while Alex Mendiola added 11 for the first-year program out of Anaheim, California and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Wolverines now travel to Arkansas to take on the 10-2 Razorbacks of the SEC, who are also 9-0 at home. The game, which can be seen the SEC Network, tips at 1 p.m. CT/noon MT. It will be Utah Valley's second trip to Fayetteville including a visit on Nov. 22, 2011, a 67-59 Arkansas win. The Razorbacks are just outside the Top 25 in both the AP Poll and USA Today Coaches Poll.
Saturday's game is the last non-conference road contest of the year for the Wolverines. Utah Valley will open WAC play and defense of last season's regular season title on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 7:05 p.m. MT against Seattle University.
