Wolverines knock off Baylor on Stratford's late goal

Aug. 29, 2014

Box Score

OREM, Utah -- Kim Stratford's goal in the 84th minute sent Utah Valley University to a 2-1 win over Baylor University in the 2014 home opener on Friday night at Clyde Field. The win came in front a school record crowd of 1,355 fans.

Stratford's goal, with 6:09 remaining, came just inside the top of the 18 on assists from Sarah Cipperley and Sydney Fitzpatrick. The senior midfielder fired the shot with her right foot and the ball found the back of the net after deflecting off Baylor goalkeeper Michelle Kloss' gloves.

Unlike last week's pair of matches in Portland, where the Wolverines (1-2) found themselves down a goal early, it was Utah Valley that put early pressure on the Big 12's Bears (2-1) less than four minutes in.

Junior Kasandra Anderson scored an impressive goal, taking one touch off a deflection and firing a rocket into the upper 90 just 3:37 into the game. That 1-0 lead lasted until the 33rd minute, when Ashley York took a cross from Natalie Huggins that crossed through the box and right to York in front of the goal.

UVU goalkeeper Jessica Duffin recorded five saves on the night with the Wolverines also recording two team saves. The second team save came in the waning seconds on a last ditch effort from Baylor to tie the game. With her back to the goal, Sarah Moghadas attempted to direct the ball in on a ball from Hadley Young, but Caitlin Mortensen was there to deflect it out of the box as the clock ticked away.

Friday's match was the first of seven straight home games for Utah Valley. The Wolverines will next host Boise State on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. MT.
