Men's Soccer Shuts Out Gonzaga, 2-0, in Front of Record Crowd

Box Score OREM, UtahMatt Gay scored a pair of second half goals to lead the Utah Valley University men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout homecoming victory over Gonzaga in front of a record crowd 3,209 fans Friday night at Clyde Field.

The Wolverines improve to 2-2-0 overall and remain undefeated at home, while Gonzaga falls to 0-4-0 on the season.

"It was a solid performance front to back by our team, and the environment at Clyde Field was absolutely electrifying!" UVU head coach Greg Maas said.

Gay, a freshman forward, sprinted down the left side of the field and knocked the ball past the Gonzaga keeper in the 52nd minute to record the game's first goal. Freshman forward Karson Payton assisted the score.

Gay put the ball in the back of the net again in the 85th minute after rebounding his own shot on goal and kicking it past the Gonzaga keeper.

Collin Partee led the Utah Valley defense with five saves in the box. The freshman keeper picked up his first career shutout in the victory. The UVU defense limited the Bulldogs to 12 shots, including five shots on goal.

Payton led the Wolverines with seven shots on the night, including two on goal. Gay tallied five shots with three on goal. Utah Valley out shot Gonzaga 19-12 in the game, including 13-6 in the second half.

Utah Valley continues play at home against Denver on Sept. 19. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
