Wolverine Soccer Travels to Windy City for Pair of Matches

OREM, Utah — Following its impressive debut in last week's program-opening match, the Utah Valley University men's soccer team is in the Windy City this week for a pair of contests. The Wolverines (1-0) will play at DePaul on Friday at 4 p.m. CT and against Loyola Chicago on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.  The games are part of the Doubletree Hotel North Shore Chicago Classic.

In the program's maiden contest, Utah Valley topped UMass 5-1 in a game that aired live on NSCAAtv.com. Five different Wolverines scored goals in the match played in front of a standing-room-only crowd of 2,610 fans.

"Saturday's match vs. UMass was special for our program, university, and soccer community. It's important, however, we stay very focused and build on Saturday's performance and momentum," head coach Greg Maas said. "It's been a highly competitive week of training as we prepare for two difficult opponents on the road in DePaul and Loyola Chicago — our entire staff and team are excited to return to the pitch."

Against UMass, Karson Payton scored the game's first goal less than six minutes in and, after the Minutemen tied it at 1-1 in the 13th minute, UVU scored three more times before the half. David Adams rebounded a direct kick by Matt Gay in the 28th minute, Austin Buxton directed a pass from Thomas Loomis and Paul Hoffmeister into the side net in the 34th minute, and Lucas Cawley took a touch pass from Buxton in the 44th minute for a 4-1 advantage by the break.

The final goal came in the 62nd minute when Collin Partee's goal kick past midfield was headed by Skyler Milne to Matt Gay, who then added a goal to his two assist night.

DePaul opened with two road contests last week making Friday's contest the 2014 home opener for the Blue Demons, who dropped a 2-1 match at Milwaukee before a 4-3 overtime win at Green Bay. Loyola Chicago picked up a nice, 2-0 win over Dayton in it opening contest of the season last weekend at home.

Following the weekend's matches, Utah Valley returns to Clyde Field for Homecoming next week. The Wolverines will face Gonzaga on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. MT in a doubleheader that also has the UVU women hosting UTEP at 5 p.m. MT as part of the Homecoming night festivities.
