Match Notes
OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley University wrestling team will conclude its month-long homestand against a pair of ranked teams from the Pac-12 Conference this weekend. The Wolverines will welcome No. 20 Oregon State to town on Friday and No. 25 Stanford on Saturday.
Â
The UVU and OSU dual will take place Friday evening at 7 p.m. while Saturday's contest against the Cardinal will begin at 3:30 p.m. Both non-conference duals will take place at the PE Building and will be televised live locally on UVU TV.
Â
The Wolverines will enter the weekend with a 2-4 overall record (1-1 Western Wrestling Conference) following a 25-13 come-from-behind win over conference foe Air Force last Friday. In that outing, the Falcons jumped out to a 13-0 lead after winning the first three matches but UVU quickly countered back by taking the final seven bouts of the contest. Junior 125-pounder
Chasen Tolbert led the way for the Wolverines with a 27-second pin over AFA's Evan Ulinski.
Â
Senior 174-pounder
Ethan Smith began the Utah Valley winning streak against the Academy with a 3-1 overtime victory over Michael Billingsley. Juniors
Ross Taylor (184) and
Derek Thomas (197), as well as senior
Adam Fager (285) then followed with three straight wins via decision before Tolbert's quick pin. Two-time NCAA qualifier
Jade Rauser (133) then took care of business with a 10-4 decision over Anthony McHugh before freshman 141-pounder
Matthew Ontiveros capped the streak with a 14-5 major decision.
Â
Rauser will enter the weekend leading the Wolverines with a 16-5 record and ranked 26th in his weight class on the first coaches' panel ranking. Tolbert also finds himself nationally ranked for UVU, as he comes in at 24th with an 11-4 record.
Â
About Oregon State
The 20th-ranked Beavers will come to Orem with an unblemished 7-0 record on the year. They are also a perfect 4-0 in Pac-12 action. Oregon State most recently defeated a pair of WWC schools last weekend on the road in Northern Colorado (40-6) and South Dakota State (35-6). The Beavers also hold victories over Southern Oregon (43-6), Arizona State (16-15), Boise State (31-3), Stanford (19-12) and Bakersfield (32-5).
Â
All-American Taylor Meeks leads the way for OSU with a 27-3 record and will enter Friday ranked seventh nationally by InterMat. Freshman Ronnie Bresser (24-4) too is ranked 14th at 125.
Â
Friday's contest will mark just the second all-time meeting between the Wolverines and Beavers on the mat. OSU leads the series 1-0 after a 49-0 victory at the Jack Hancock Dual Invitational on Nov. 18, 2006 in Golden, Colorado.
About Stanford
The 25th-ranked Cardinal will enter Saturday's matinee with an 8-2 overall clip (3-1 Pac-12). Most recently Stanford defeated Arizona State by a score of 18-13 in Pac-12 action last weekend. SU also hold wins over Cal Baptist (27-9), Bakersfield (25-6), North Carolina (17-16), Menlo (21-12), Brown (27-9), Cal Poly (22-13) and Air Force (27-8). The Cardinal's two loses have come to No. 8 Northwestern (21-13) and No. 20 Oregon State (19-12).
Â
Stanford currently has two of its wrestlers ranked in the top-20 nationally by InterMat. Sophomore Jim Wilson (24-4) leads the way as he is ranked 13th at 165, while two-time NCAA qualifier Evan Silver (12-5) comes in at 15th at 125.
Â
Saturday's dual will mark the fourth all-time meeting between the Wolverines and the Cardinal. UVU holds a 2-1 series advantage after picking up an 18-15 win over the Cardinal at home two years ago and a 25-10 victory in Palo Alto three seasons ago.
Â
Up Next for Utah Valley
The Wolverines will hit the road for the first time since Dec. 21 to face South Dakota State and North Dakota State in conference action next weekend. UVU and SDSU will do battle next Friday in Brookings before heading up to Fargo to face NDSU the following day. Utah Valley will then close its regular season at home against Northern Colorado the subsequent Saturday (Feb. 14).Â
