OREM, Utah – Despite a big win from
Chasen Tolbert at 125 pounds, the Utah Valley University wrestling team dropped a 28-6 contest to No. 25 Stanford on Saturday afternoon at the PE Building. The dual meet marked an end to UVU's month-long homestand and was the Wolverines' second consecutive setback to a ranked opponent from the Pac-12 Conference in as many days.
Â
With UVU (2-6) trailing 9-0, Tolbert picked an upset victory over No. 15 Evan Silver at 125 to pull the team score to 9-3. Tolbert was the aggressor in the match as he scored all of his points in the second period thanks to an escape and a takedown. The two-time NCAA qualifier Silver frantically looked for a takedown in the final stanza, but Tolbert nicely blocked every attempt as the Wolverine junior picked up his second win over a ranked foe on the season. With the victory, Tolbert improves to 12-5 in 2014-15 with wins over the 15th-ranked Silver and No. 8 David Terao of American.
Â
"This is a great win for Chasen, which should help solidify his top-25 ranking," said head coach
Greg Williams. "There were some improvements that need to be made in a couple of areas, however. Still plenty to work to do individually this next month."
Â
In a very tightly contested opening match, Wolverine junior
Ross Taylor (184 pounds) found himself on the wrong end of a 5-4 overtime contest to Stanford's (9-2) Zach Nevills. Taylor jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bout with an escape and a takedown in the second frame but back came Nevills as he took a 4-3 lead of his own thanks to a reversal and a takedown. Taylor then sent the match to overtime with an escape point. Taylor was the aggressor in the sudden-victory overtime period but Nevills managed to escape the frame with the bout still tied. Nevills then managed to put the contest away in the first tiebreaker period with an escape.
Â
The Cardinal followed with two more victories at 197 and heavyweight thanks to a 3-1 decision by Garet Krohn and a 6-2 decision by Nathan Butler to take a 9-0 lead in the dual.
Â
With SU later holding to a 9-3 advantage following Tolbert's win, UVU junior
Jade Rauser and Stanford's Connor Schram found themselves deadlocked in another close contest. SU's Schram got the best of Rauser in the end, however, as he recorded a 5-4 decision. Trailing 5-2 in the final period, the two-time NCAA qualifier for the Wolverines picked up an escape and another point due to Schram's stalling to pull within a point but that was as close as Rauser could get as Schram managed to hold on to the one-point win.
Â
Freshman
Matthew Ontiveros then answered back Wolverines at 141 with a 4-0 decision over Mason Pengilly to pull UVU within 12-6 at the time. Ontiveros scored on an escape in the second, a takedown in the third, as well as an additional riding time point to win the bout.
Â
The Cardinal then put the match away, however, by winning the final four bouts of the contest.Â
Â
Despite dropping eight of the 10 matches in the dual, UVU surrendered bonus points in just two of the eight bouts.
Â
The Wolverines (1-1 Western Wrestling Conference) will now hit the road next weekend for the first time since Dec. 21 to face South Dakota State and North Dakota State in conference action. UVU and SDSU will go head-to-head in Brookings on Friday (Feb. 6) while the Wolverines and Bison will wrestle in Fargo on Saturday (Feb. 7). Utah Valley will then close its regular season against fellow WWC foe Northern Colorado at home on Feb. 14.Â
