OREM, Utah—
Sheridan Fox scored a pair of goals and
Kasandra Anderson put the game winner in the back of the net to lead the Utah Valley University women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over CSU Bakersfield Sunday at Clyde Field.
Â
Sunday's win caps off an unbeaten record at home for the Wolverines as the team wraps up its Clyde Field slate with an impressive 9-0-1 record. The only other time that UVU has gone unbeaten at home in a season was in 2003 when the Wolverines went 3-0-0.
Â
The Wolverines stay atop the WAC standings as the team improves to 11-4-1 overall and 6-0-1 (19 points) in league play. CSU Bakersfield drops to 5-9-2 overall and 3-3-1 in WAC play.
Â
"I thought we had a really good start to this match and set the tone for the game," said Utah Valley head coach
Brent Anderson. "The high pressured defense created a lot of opportunities for us and gave us a lot of good looks close to goal. Our defense was really solid in the first half and for most of the second half. We really had some great ball possession throughout the match. There's about five to 10 minutes where we got a little unorganized and when you give a team like Bakersfield an opportunity, it takes it. I'm really happy with the way the team played overall. It's a great way to close out the season at home."
Â
Fox scored her seventh and eighth goals of the season. The junior forward put UVU on the scoreboard in the 28th minute as she stole the ball from a defender and fired a shot just outside the box into the lower left corner. Fox scored back-to-back goals as she found the back of the net in the 45th minute after receiving a ball from
Jamie Brown in the box and then putting it past the keeper to give UVU a 2-0 advantage.
Â
After a scramble in the box in the 48th minute,
Taylor Kirk kicked the ball back to Anderson who then took the shot from the top of the box which deflected off the keepers out-stretched hands and into the back of the goal. Anderson's sixth goal of the season proved to be the game winner for the Wolverines.
Â
CSU Bakersfield battled back as WAC goal leader Aminah Settles drove down the field and got the ball past the keeper on the right side to cut the UVU lead to 3-1. The 'Runners scored again in the 86th minute as Kate McMullin headed a corner kick off the near post and into the goal for CSUB's second score of the game.
Â
Utah Valley out-shot Bakersfield 18-8, including a 9-1 advantage in the first period.
Libby Weber led the Wolverines with five shots, including two on goal. Defensively,
Jessica Duffin registered a pair of saves in the box for UVU.
Â
The Wolverines will travel to play Grand Canyon and CSU Bakersfield this upcoming week. UVU will take on GCU on Friday at 7 p.m. MT before taking on the Roadrunners on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT.
