UVU HITS ROAD FOR CRUCIAL LEAGUE MATCHESUtah Valley University men's soccer hits the road for the final time in the WAC regular season, facing a crucial pair of matches at Grand Canyon and UNLV. The Wolverines will play at GCU on Friday at 7:30 p.m. PT/8:30 p.m. MT in a game that will air on the WAC Digital Network.
The Wolverines are at UNLV on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT. Both the Wolverines (11-3-1, 4-1-1) and the Rebels are receiving votes in the NSCAA Top 25 Coaches Poll. UVU opens the weekend in second place in the WAC, with 13 points, behind No. 19 Seattle U (15 points) and just ahead of UNLV (10 points), with three weeks left in the regular season.
"We are in a tough stretch of five of six games on the road, and collectively, GCU and UNLV are 9-1 at home," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "This weekend will prove massive in the WAC standings. We need results, it's as simple as that."
ABOUT THE OPPOSITIONUVU was on opposite ends of 1-0 contests last season against this weekend's opponents, defeating GCU but falling to UNLV at Clyde Field during 2014.
Grand Canyon enters the weekend at 6-6-0 overall and 2-3-0 in WAC play. The Antelopes are a perfect 4-0-0 at home with two of those coming in conference play. GCU, ranked 10th in the latest NSCAA West Region poll, is coached by Schellas Hyndman, the 2010 MLS Coach of the Year for FC Dallas. Alberto Sanchez Garcia has seven goals to lead the 'Lopes and, combined with four assists, has 18 points on the season.
UNLV, ranked right behind UVU in fourth in the NSCAA West Region poll, is 9-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in WAC play. The Rebels are 5-1 at home on Johann Field. While they've never faced UNLV in Las Vegas, the Wolverines have played on the Rebels' home field four times over the past two seasons at the Johann Memorial Classic, going 3-1-0. Danny Musovski leads the WAC with nine goals and 21 points for UNLV, which plays WAC-leading Seattle U on Friday night.
LAST TIME OUTSkyler Milne made program history, becoming the first player to record a hat trick in last week's 3-2 win over San José State. Milne scored twice in the first half and, after the Spartans came back to tie it in the second half, put home the game-winner on an penalty kick in the 88th minute. The performance earned him the WAC Offensive Player of the Week award on Monday and also a spot on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
On Sunday, UVU and CSU Bakersfield played to a scoreless draw, the first time this season the Wolverines have finished in a draw. Utah Valley is 3-1-1 in overtime contests this season.
UP NEXTWith just two home games remaining in the regular season following this weekend's trip, UVU will play once per week over the final two weeks. The Wolverines host Incarnate Word in Thursday, Oct. 29 before closing out the WAC regular season on Nov. 7 against Seattle U.
