OREM, Utah--The Utah Valley University men's basketball team travels to Denver, Colorado to take on the University of Denver Wednesday night at the Magness Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. MST.
Â
Denver heads into Wednesday's game with a 2-1 record. The Pioneers opened the season at the Santa Clara Cable Car Classic in California, where the team fell to Milwaukee before defeating host Santa Clara and Lipscomb.
Â
Senior guard Nate Engesser leads DU through its first three games, averaging 15.3 points and 3.7 rebounds a contest. Engesser has already knocked down 16 three-point field goals this season. The Pioneers like to shoot the ball from long range as the team averages 28.3 shots per game from beyond the arc, while connecting on an average of 12.0 per contest.
"We're excited to get out on the road," said Utah Valley head coach
Mark Pope. "Denver is a really tough team. They get everbody sideways with this matchup zone and they run Princeton's offense. We've had two really important days of prep and now we have to go battle. It's a very well-coached team. It's really hard to win there. We're excited about the challenge."
Â
Utah Valley enters Wednesday's matchup with a 1-1 record. The team opened the season with an 85-54 setback at BYU before bouncing back with an 89-60 win over Great Falls in its home opener on Saturday night.
Â
In Saturday's win over Great Falls, junior forward
Konner Frey led five UVU players in double figures with 17 points. The win marked coach
Mark Pope's first career victory. Frey scored his 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, including a 1-of-2 clip from long range. Frey was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine. He also registered two assists, two blocks and two steals.
Â
Frey has led the Wolverines through their first two games of the season, averaging 18.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks per game.
Ivory Young is also averaging double digit scoring at 13.0 points a contest.
