Utah Valley defeats Texas-Pan American, 72-49

OREM, Utah—Marcel Davis matched a season high with 20 points to lead the Utah Valley University men's basketball team to a 72-49 win over Texas-Pan American Saturday night at the UCCU Center.
 
Utah Valley improves to 10-16 overall and 4-7 in WAC play. Texas-Pan American falls to 9-19 on the season with a 3-9 mark in league play.
 
Utah Valley took a quick 11-6 lead six minutes into the contest. The two teams then produced two ties and six lead changes. Tied 22-22 with 3:41 to play in the first period, Utah Valley went on an 11-3 run to take a 33-25 advantage into the break.
 
Texas-Pan American opened the final period on an 8-2 run to cut the UVU lead to just two points, 35-33, with 18:12 to play. UVU answered with a 12-4 run over the next five minutes to extend the lead to 10 points, 47-37. The Wolverines continued to extend their lead through the remainder of the final period to secure the win.
 
"I thought it was a really good overall team effort," said Utah Valley head coach Dick Hunsaker. "We got a really nice lift from out bench. I was very pleased with our determination and resiliency after a very hard-fought game that we came out on the short end on Thursday night."
 
Davis tied his season high with 20 points, connecting on 9-of-15 shots from the field, including a pair of threes. Davis also tallied three assists and three rebounds in the win.
 
Mitch Bruneel recorded 15 points on a 5-of-9 clip from the field. The senior forward also pulled down four boards and dished out two steals. Junior guard Donte Williams was also in double figures with 12 points, hitting 4-of-8 shots from the field, including two shots from beyond the arc and a 2-of-2 clip from the charity stripe.
 
Sophomore forward Zach Nelson nearly tallied a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds. Nelson also tallied six assists and two steals. Junior guard Jaden Jackson helped with eight points.
 
Utah Valley shot a 54.9 percent clip from the field and knocked down nine shots from long range. The Wolverines out-rebounded UTPA 32-20.
 
Utah Valley heads out on its final WAC road trip of the season next week as the team travels to take on Missouri-Kansas City and Chicago State.
