LAKEWOOD, Calif. – The Utah Valley University softball team suffered its second setback of the day as it fell to Stanford 6-0 on Friday afternoon at the Long Beach Louisville Slugger Invitational at Mayfair Park. Despite recording nine hits in the contest, the Wolverines were shut out for the second time on the day as they previously fell to Weber State by a score of 5-0.
Â
"We did some good things today but didn't connect all the pieces together the way that we needed to," head coach
Nikki Palmer said. "We are going to continue to learn from this experience to propel us forward."
Â
The Cardinal (10-8), who are currently receiving votes for the top 25, were led by Madi Schreyer and Haley Snyder as the two pitchers combined to shutout UVU (5-9). The duo combined to strike out seven Wolverines as they scattered nine hits and stranded 11 runners on the base paths in the game. Snyder picked up the win in relief as she pitched the final four innings to improve to 7-5 on the season.
Â
Utah Valley threatened in the first, second, third, sixth and seventh innings but just couldn't manage to score as Stanford's two hurlers continually pitched out of jams.
Â
The Wolverines loaded the bases in the first following consecutive hits from
Kelli Gendlek,
Jaylen Watson and
Brittney Vansway, but couldn't manage to manufacture a run as their next two batters flew out to end the rally. After not converting on a couple of other opportunities in the game, Utah Valley then once again had the bases full in the seventh. Down to their final out, Stanford's Snyder then got
Taleigh Williams to fly out to end the ballgame.
Â
Stanford scored all of their runs by the third inning as they pushed home three in the first and three more in the third.
Â
Three players finished with two hits apiece for the Cardinal and Lauren Bertoy plated a pair of runs.
Â
Watson led the Wolverines with three hits in the contest as she went 3-for-4 with a trio of singles. Vansway was next as she added two hits and a walk.
Â
Utah Valley starter
Makayla Shadle was saddled with the loss as she gave up six runs to drop to 2-2 on the season.
Kellee Ramsey pitched the final 3.1 innings of solid relief for UVU, as she did not allow a run. The Cardinal mustered just one hit off of Ramsey as she retired 10 of the 12 batters she faced. Â
Â
UVU will continue play at the Long Beach Louisville Slugger Invite on Saturday against Wichita State and Portland State. Both games will take place at Cal State Fullerton's Anderson Family Field with the Wolverines and Shockers set for 10:30 a.m. MT/9:30 a.m. PT while UVU versus PSU will follow at 1 p.m. MT/noon PT.
