OREM, Utah—The Utah Valley University women's basketball team returns home to host Bakersfield on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. MT in the UCCU Center and Seattle U on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. MT in the PE Building.
Utah Valley (7-14, 1-5 WAC) enters this week's contests on a four game losing streak, dropping two on the road to Chicago State 60-55 on Jan. 29 and Kansas City 61-58 on Jan. 31.
The Wolverines are led by sophomore
Rhaiah Spooner-Knight with 13.1 points per game while teammate
Mariah Seals is right behind with 10.7.
Karlee Norris leads on the boards with a 7.4 average. In WAC play, Spooner-Knight leads with 10.0 points per game, and
Sam Loggins and Norris lead on the boards with 5.7 per game.
Bakersfield (15-6, 4-2 WAC) is led by Tyonna Outland averaging 19.1 points per game and is the current school record holder for career points, tallying 1,849 thus far. Batabe Zempare leads on the boards with 10.2, and broke the school record for career rebounds with 715 thus far. In WAC games, Outland is averaging 20.5 points per game while Zempara tallies 11.8 boards per contest.
"Hopefully we will be more consistent. Our young players hopefully have learned what we need to do to be successful in this first round of WAC play and apply that on the court this weekend," head coach
Cathy Nixon said. "Bakersfield is very good, so if we can defend and be confident on the offensive end, and take care of the ball then we should be competitive."
Utah Valley is 2-7 all time against the Roadrunners, with CSUB knocking UVU out in the first round of the WAC tournament 65-63 in overtime on March 12, 2014. The Wolverines claimed their last Bakersfield victory 72-69 on Feb. 27, 2013 in the UCCU Center.
The Roadrunners are on a three-game winning streak, most recently defeating Seattle U (6-15, 3-3 WAC) on the road 69-62 on Jan. 31. The victory was the stop to a two-game winning streak for the Redhawks.
The Wolverines are 0-4 all-time against the Redhawks. Their last meeting was both teams' WAC opener this season in Seattle on Jan. 10, 2015 with a Redhawk win 73-58.
Seattle U is led by Taelor Ross with 11.5 points per game while Wilma Afunugo leads on the boards with 7.3 rebounds. In WAC play. Crystal Allen leads with 14.2 points per game with Ross just behind with 12.5 points. Afunugo leads with 8.4 rebounds in conference games.
