Match Notes
OREM, Utah – After a pair of non-conference duals against ranked teams from the Pac-12 last week, the Utah Valley University wrestling team will return to Western Wrestling Conference action this weekend in the Dakotas. The Wolverines will first face South Dakota State in Brookings on Friday before concluding the trip in Fargo a day later against No. 24 North Dakota State.
Â
The trip will mark UVU's first venture out on the road since Dec. 21, as it spent the entire month of January at home.
Â
Both Friday and Saturday's contests will begin at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT and will feature live results as well as live video. Live results can be followed by visiting TrackWrestling.com, while live video for the SDSU dual can be found at GoJacks.com (pay subscription required) and Saturday's against the first-place Bison at GoBison.com (pay subscription required).
Â
The Wolverines will enter the weekend 2-6 on the season and 1-1 in the WWC. Prior to falling to both No. 20 Oregon State (36-6) and No. 25 Stanford (28-6) at home last week, UVU defeated conference foe Air Force by a score of 25-13 on Jan. 23. In the dual meet versus the Falcons, the Wolverines managed to overcome a 13-0 deficit by winning the final seven matches for their first WWC victory of the season.
Â
In UVU's most recent dual meet against the Cardinal last Saturday, junior 125-pounder
Chasen Tolbert led the way for the Wolverines with a 3-0 decision over No. 15 Evan Silver. With the victory, Tolbert now finds himself ranked 20th nationally on this week's InterMat poll. The junior holds a 12-5 record while fellow junior and two-time NCAA qualifier
Jade Rauser leads the Wolverines with a 17-6 clip at 133 pounds.
Â
About South Dakota State
The Jackrabbits are 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the WWC after splitting a pair of league duals against No. 18 Wyoming and Air Force last week. SDSU first fell to the ranked Cowboys by a score of 32-10 before defeating the Falcons 23-9. The Jacks also hold wins on the year over Northern Colorado, Boise State, Buffalo, Cal Poly, Drexel, SIU-Edwardsville, Augustana and Dakota Wesleyan.
Â
Seventh-ranked Cody Pack leads SDSU with a 29-4 record at 157 pounds. He is a two-time NCAA qualifier, a four-time WWC Wrestler of the Week so far this season, and picked up a pair of major decisions over Wyoming's Archie Colgan and AFA's Sam Kreimier last weekend. Nate Rotert is next for the Jacks as he holds a 20-9 record at 197.
Â
Friday will mark the 10th all-time meeting between the Wolverines and Jackrabbits. UVU holds a commanding 8-1 advantage and has won the last seven contests, including that past three in Brookings.
Â
About North Dakota State
The 24th-ranked Bison will enter Saturday's meeting 7-3 overall and atop the WWC standings with a perfect 3-0 record in conference duals after a 22-21 victory (via criteria) over No. 18 Wyoming in Laramie last week. NDSU and Wyoming actually won five bouts apiece and tied at 21, but the Bison picked up an additional team point due to the most falls to break the tie. North Dakota State has now won six straight duals, as it also holds wins over South Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Boise State and Cal Poly during the streak.
Â
Hayden Zillmer leads NDSU as he comes in at ninth nationally at 184 with a 26-4 record. Reigning WWC Wrestler of the Week Josh Rodriguez (14-5) is next as he jumped six spots in the polls to No. 13 at 125 after defeating two ranked conference foes last week. Two-time NCAA qualifier Evan Knutson rounds out North Dakota State's ranked wrestlers as he is 15th at heavyweight with a 20-7 clip.
Â
Saturday's contest will mark the 10th all-time meeting between UVU and NDSU. The Bison will enter the dual having won eight of the nine previous matchups.
Â
Up Next for Utah Valley
The Wolverines will come home to face fellow conference foe Northern Colorado on Feb. 14 in their regular season finale. The contest will mark Senior Night for Utah Valley, as three Wolverine seniors will be honored prior to the first match.
