Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Defensive effort leads UVU to lopsided win over SU 73-42

OREM, Utah—Behind Rhaiah Spooner-Knight's first double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Utah Valley University women's basketball defeated WAC foe Seattle U 73-42, which is their most lopsided Division I win of the season, a 31 point margin.

Spooner-Knight shot 7-for-11 from the field, 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and added a steal. Rebecca MaWhinney shared a game high 18 points, shot 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, and 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. MaWhinney also chipped in five rebounds and a steal. Georgia Agnew scored eight points on the night and dished out eight of the Wolverines' 14 assists on the night. Sam Loggins neared a double-double with 10 rebounds and 8 points. Loggins also added two blocks. Patrice Toston finished with six points.

The Wolverines shot 55.2 percent in the first half and 48.1 percent overall, connecting on 25-of-52 field goals. Utah Valley rode the momentum, shooting 18-for-21 from the free throw line for 85.7 percent on the night.

Utah Valley held the Redhawks to just 18.9 percent shooting in the second half, and 25.4 percent in the contest. Seattle U connected on just one of 16 attempts from the three point line and were held to 50.0 percent free throw shooting.

Seattle U's scoring drought came from 24 consecutive missed field goal attempts in the second half, spanning almost 14 minutes. Wilma Afunugo made a layup at 16:38 in the second half, 41-26, which was the last Redhawk field goal until Cydnee Ceballos laid it in with 2:39 remaining to bring the score to 65-33.

The Wolverines went on a 24-3 spurt kicked off by a layup from Spooner-Knight at 15:42 and finished the run with a pair of free-throws by MaWhinney with just 3:38 left to play. Spooner-Knight led the way with 10 of the 24 points during the run. The Redhawks' only points came from two free throws from Ceballos, and another free throw by Taelor Ross. The run ended when Clair Metoyer put in two more from the charity stripe with 2:39 remaining in the game.

In the first half, Mariah Seals led Utah Valley into a 14-2 run with a jumper at 14:30 left before the break. The spurt lasted until 9:28 with a Spooner-Knight jumper, giving the Wolverines a 22-10 lead. At the half, Utah Valley led Seattle U 35-21.

For Seattle U, Taelor Ross led the team with nine points and seven rebounds and three blocks. Teammate Ceballos added eight points and five rebounds.
