OREM, Utah – Utah Valley stranded nine baserunners as it dropped the second game of a Thursday afternoon doubleheader against Oklahoma State 9-1 in six innings at Wolverine Field.
Brittney Vansway had two hits and drove in
Brianna Gatlin for the only run UVU (11-20) was able to manage against OSU (16-13) pitcher Jessi Haffner. Haffner picked up her fourth win as she tossed a complete game, allowing the one run on five hits and four walks while striking out seven over 6.0 innings.Â
Vansway drove in Gatlin in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Wolverines fought off a run-rule shortened game. Oklahoma State's Shelby Davis scored the winning run an inning later when she scored on a wild-pitch to make it 9-1. UVU threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning but
Megan Peay was tagged out at home on a squeeze attempt and UVU left two of their nine runners on base to end the shortened game.
The runners left on base and pitchers issuing walks were a big difference in the game as Wolverine pitchers issued eight free passes in the game.
"We've got to cut the walks down," said Utah Valley head coach
Nikki Palmer. "We know that. We've got to have hitters producing behind each other. It kind of killed us in the end but it is something we can improve on."
Makayla Shadle took the loss for UVU in the circle as she allowed six runs on three hits and four walks over 1.1 innings pitched.Â
UVU will take on rival BYU at Miller Park in Provo on Saturday with first pitch slated at 3:30 p.m. MT. The game will be televised live on BYUtv.
