BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Despite double-doubles from
Sam Loggins and
Rhaiah Spooner-Knight, the Utah Valley University women's basketball team fell to WAC favorite CSU Bakersfield 78-54 on Saturday at the Icardo Center.
Loggins double-double came from 12 points and a team high 12 rebounds while Spooner-Knight had a team high 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Three Wolverines finished in double-digit scoring, with Loggins' 12, Spooner-Knight's 17 and
Mariah Seals finished with 15.
Rebecca MaWhinney and
Taylor Gordon each added three, and
Patrice Toston and
Deijah Blanks each finished with two to round out the Wolverine scoring.
"It started out a little bit sluggish and Bakersfield jumped on us from the beginning. The credit goes to Bakersfield, they played really well and aggressively," head coach
Cathy Nixon said. "We turned the ball over a few times and they got some run-outs and made some baskets at the beginning of the game that set us back. We had some good moments on both ends of the floor, but we closed our regular season and are looking forward to the tournament and playing our best basketball."
The Wolverines couldn't hold on as Tyonna Outland led the Roadrunners with 21 points, and three other Runners scored into the double digits. Brooklyn Hinkens earned 14, Shaquita Smith finished with 11, Erika Williams chipped in 10 and Batabe Zempare also finished with nine.
Bakersfield led at the half 42-30, and broke open the second half with a 13-3 run to seal their victory.
The Wolverines will play in the first round of the WAC Tournament on March 11 at 3 p.m. MT, as the fifth seed against Seattle U at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
