UVU wins front end of doubleheader against Seattle U, 4-2

OREM, Utah—Makayla Shadle pitched six innings with a pair of strikeouts to lead the Utah Valley University softball team to a 4-2 win over WAC foe Seattle U in the front end of a doubleheader Saturday morning at Wolverine Field.

With the win, the Wolverines improve to 15-28 overall and 3-5 in WAC play. Seattle U falls to 13-29 on the season with a 2-6 mark in conference action.

Utah Valley took an early 1-0 lead after Kori Barrios hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Sydney Austin who was pinch running for Jaylen Watson. Watson had reached on a single to left field. The Wolverines scored another run in the third inning after Watson doubled to left field send Morgan Smith across the plate to give UVU a 2-0 advantage.

The Wolverines extended their lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Barrios singled up the middle to score Kristy Snyder. Barrios then crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Seattle U cut into the Wolverine lead with two runs in the top of the sixth to make it 4-2. The Redhawks left two runners stranded as Shadle struck out the go-ahead run at the plate for her second strikeout of the game.

Shadle worked 6.0 innings while giving up only two runs to pick up her fifth win of the season. The freshman hurler recorded a pair of strikeouts and allowed just five hits on the day. Bailey Moore picked up her first save of the season as she forced SU into three straight groundouts in the top of the seventh.
