UVU TRAVELS TO GONZAGA, NO. 15 DENVERAfter opening its home schedule last weekend, Utah Valley is back out on the road this week with contests at Gonzaga and No. 15 Denver. The Wolverines face the Bulldogs on Friday at 3:30 p.m. PT in Spokane before traveling to face the nationally-ranked Pioneers on Sunday at 7 p.m. MT.
The Wolverines (5-1-0) suffered their first defeat of the 2015 season on Sunday, in a 1-0 loss to Mercer at Clyde Field in Orem.
"We are a resilient and determined team, and this weekend's matches on the road vs Gonzaga and Denver will be another true test of that," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "Both programs are off to a great start, as are we, and we anticipate two very good matches that will help in our preparations for WAC play."
LAST TIME OUTLast weekend, Utah Valley hosted the Holiday Inn Express Invitational, opening with a 4-1 win over Bradley before the loss to Mercer. In the victory,
Austin Buxton scored two goals while
Karson Payton and
Skyler Milne also added goals for the Wolverines. Buxton and Milne were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITIONGonzaga is off to a 3-2-1 start after six matches and is winners of two out of three including a 1-0 shutout of Milwaukee on Sunday. The Bulldogs and Wolverines met in 2014 at Clyde Field in Orem, with UVU winning that contest 2-0. Gonzaga, currently in a stretch of six straight at home, will host No. 8 Oregon State on Sept. 22 to wrap up the homestand.
Summit League defending champion and preseason favorite Denver plays at Atlantic 10 favorite Saint Louis on Friday night before hosting Utah Valley. The Pioneers are an unbeaten 4-0-1 on the year and Sunday's match marks their return home after a four-game stint on the road. The Wolverines defeated then-No. 21 Denver, 2-1, last season in Orem.
UP NEXTThe Wolverines return home for Homecoming and a match against Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. MT. It will be UVU's only game of the week and the team's final non-conference match of the season. WAC play begins at home against Air Force (Oct. 2) and Missouri-Kansas City (Oct. 4).
