WOLVERINES COMPETING AT JOHANN MEMORIAL CLASSIC AT UNLVUtah Valley University men's soccer heads to Las Vegas this weekend for two games at the Johann Memorial Classic at UNLV, where the Wolverines will face Pacific and Saint Joseph's. It's the second straight year UVU has competed at the invitational.
UVU and Pacific open the invite on Friday at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT with UNLV and Saint Joseph's playing later Friday night after UVU's women's team faces UNLV. The Wolverine men wrap up the weekend on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. PT against Saint Joseph's.
"We have had a sharp week of training and look forward to our matches vs. Pacific and Saint Joseph's. Both programs are solid, well coached, and we will need to be very good on both sides of the ball to achieve the desired results we have set out for ourselves," head coach
Greg Maas said.
LAST TIME OUTThe Wolverines opened their second season of men's soccer with a pair of shutout wins on the road in Massachusetts. UVU opened the season at UMass, winning 1-0 behind an
Austin Buxton goal in overtime. The golden goal came in the 100th minute, just 46 seconds before the end of the first OT frame. The win was the program's first win in extra time after going 0-2-2 in 2014.
The second clean sheet came two days later at UMass Lowell, 2-0, with
Karson Payton scoring a first-half goal and
Paul Hoffmeister sealing the win with a late score on an
Aaron Meyer assist. Following the shutouts, defender
Alex Neff was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week for his work on the back line, which included a team save in the win over UMass Lowell.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITIONLike Utah Valley, Pacific's men's soccer program is in its second season after beginning play in 2014. The Tigers were 3-15-0 a year ago. Pacific, which competes in the West Coast Conference, opened its season with a two-game trip to the midwest where they dropped idential 2-1 contests at Drake and at Omaha. The game at Drake was decided on a penalty kick in the 81st minute of action.
Saint Joseph's, out of the Atlantic 10 Conference, is also 0-2-0 on the season. The Hawks, who hail from Philadelphia, lost 3-2 to Marist in overtime before a 4-0 loss at Rider on Monday. The loss to Marist ended in the 92nd minute following a rebounded PK. This weekend marks the first meeting between UVU and both Pacific and Saint Joseph's.
UP NEXTAfter pairing with UNLV this weekend, the Wolverines and Rebels -- both WAC men's soccer members -- will move to Orem for a similar schedule in the Holiday Inn Express Invitational next weekend. It also marks the home-opening weekend for UVU, with the Wolverines hosting Bradley on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. MT. Mercer and UNLV are also participating in the invite, with those programs meeting Friday afternoon. On Sunday, UNLV will take on Bradley and UVU will host Mercer.
