WOLVERINES HOST SEATTLE U IN WAC OPENERThe Utah Valley University women's soccer team opens Western Athletic Conference play this week as the team hosts defending league champion Seattle U Saturday at Clyde Field. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
Utah Valley (5-4-0) seeks its first-ever win over the Redhawks on as the Wolverines are 0-8-0 all-time against SU. Utah Valley will open league play against SU in the comfy confines of Clyde Field where the team is a perfect 5-0-0. The Wolverines have outscored opponents 15-3 at Clyde Field this year.
"The team has made a lot of progress over the past couple of weeks," said Utah Valley head coach
Brent Anderson. "Our non-conference schedule has been challenging and prepared the team for the quality opponents that we will face in the WAC. It's always fun to play against Seattle. They are a great team and have been the best in the WAC for the past few years. I know the girls have been looking forward to this match and are focused and motivated to compete."
The Wolverines head into this week's matches after splitting a pair of matches last week. The team dropped a 1-0 decision at UTEP before returning home to defeat Portland State 1-0.
Kali Stubbs put the ball into the upper right 90 with just 28 seconds remaining in regulation against Portland State to secure the win.
Sheridan Fox currently leads the team in scoring with five goals, followed by
Jamie Brown with four.
Kasandra Anderson and
Tori Smith each have two scores. Fox's five goals and 11 points this season currently leads the WAC. Senior goalkeeper
Jessica Duffin leads the defensive effort with five wins, three shutouts and 38 saves in the box this year.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITIONSeattle U most recently played Idaho to a 0-0 double overtime tie on Sept. 20 to move its record to 5-2-1 on the season. The Redhawks have wins over Oregon, Vanderbilt, Gonzaga, Creighton and Purdue this year. Freshmen forwards Summer Madison and Karli White lead the team with three goals each. Senior forward Julia Moravec fronts the team with 11 points, including five assists and a pair of goals. The Redhawks have won two-straight WAC championships.
UP NEXTThe Wolverines will open Western Athletic Conference road play next week as the team travels to play Missouri-Kansas City and Chicago State on Oct. 2 and 4, respectively.
UVU AMONG WAC STAT LEADERSAs of Sept. 22, Utah Valley leads the WAC in points (59), goals (19), goals per game (2.11), assists (21) and assists per game (2.33). Individually, junior forward
Sheridan Fox fronts the league in points (11), points per game (1.22), goals (5) and goals per game (0.56).
DUFFIN BREAKS CAREER SHUTOUT RECORDJessica Duffin became Utah Valley's all-time shutout leader as she recorded her 12th clean sheet of her career in a 1-0 win over Portland State on Sunday. Duffin passes Lauren Sack (2009-13), who had 11 shutouts in her career.
DUFFIN EARNS SECOND WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORSenior keeper
Jessica Duffin was honored by the league on Monday with WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Duffin recorded her third shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Portland State last week. She also registered six saves against the Vikings. Over her two matches on the week, Duffin tallied 10 saves, one goal allowed, and one shutout.
