OREM, Utah—The Utah Valley University women's soccer team played Seattle U to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the Western Athletic Conference opener Saturday night at Clyde Field.
Utah Valley moves its record to 5-4-1 overall, including the 0-0-1 mark in WAC play. Seattle U is now 5-2-2 overall with a 0-0-1 record in league action.
"We knew Seattle would be tough," said Utah Valley head coach
Brent Anderson. "They have been the class of the conference for the past two years and we knew that this would be a battle. I think the team played really well tonight. It took us some time to get going but once we did we started to create better attacking opportunities, especially when we started playing a little wider."
Sophomore
Sara Callister gave the Wolverines a 1-0 advantage in the 63rd minute as she blocked the Seattle keeper's clearance attempt at the top of the box, drove past a Redhawk defender toward the right side of the box and then fired a shot into the upper right corner of the goal for the score.
With 19 minutes remaining in regulation, Seattle U's Karli White tied the game as she beat the Wolverines to the ball on a back pass to UVU keeper
Jessica Duffin. White floated the ball over Duffin to the right side of the goal for equalizer.
The Wolverines out-shot Seattle U 11-3, including a 3-2 advantage on goal. Senior
Jamie Brown and junior
Taylor Kirk each led UVU with two shots on the night. UVU was called for 14 fouls compared to SU's four.
"I was happy with the way we performed," Anderson said. "I think we stuck with it in the second half and stuck with it in overtime. Seattle is a tough team and this is a tough conference. This is a match from us to learn from and to build off of as we move forward."
Utah Valley continues WAC play on the road next week as the Wolverines travel to play Missouri-Kansas City and Chicago State on Oct. 2 and Oct. 4, respectively. UVU next returns home to host New Mexico State on Oct. 9.
