WOLVERINES TRAVEL TO PLAY UMKC, CHICAGO STATEThe Utah Valley University women's soccer team continues Western Athletic Conference play this week as the team travels to play Missouri-Kansas City and Chicago State on Friday and Sunday, respectively. The trip marks the first WAC road matches of the year for the Wolverines.
Utah Valley (5-4-1, 0-0-1) seeks its first road win of the season this week at UMKC and CSU. The Wolverines are 5-0-1 at home this year but hold a 0-4-0 mark away from the comfy confines of Clyde Field.
"The team is looking forward to the challenge of playing on the road at UMKC and Chicago State," said Utah Valley head coach
Brent Anderson. "These are two great WAC opponents and this weekend it will be critical that we stay focused defensively while capitalizing on the attacking opportunities we create. We have a number of great attacking players that need to be a bit more dangerous in the attacking third for us to get the results we need on the road."
The Wolverines head into this week's matches after playing Seattle U to a 1-1 double-overtime tie last week.
Sara Callister gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute but the Redhawks put the equalizer in the back of the net in the 71st minute to secure the tie.
Sheridan Fox currently leads the team in scoring with five goals, followed by
Jamie Brown with four.
Kasandra Anderson,
Sara Callister and
Tori Smith each have two scores. Fox's five goals ties her with two other players for the top spot on the WAC's overall goals list this season. Senior goalkeeper
Jessica Duffin leads the defensive effort with five wins, three shutouts and 39 saves in the box this year.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITIONUtah Valley's matchup with UMKC this week is a rematch of last season's WAC Tournament semifinal game, which the Kangaroos won 1-0 after scoring a goal in the 54th minute. UMKC holds a 7-3-0 record this season and won its WAC opener last week at home against Chicago State, 6-0. The 'Roos are led by freshman midfielder Reighan Childers who leads both the team and the WAC in points (12) and goals (5). Chicago State is winless this season at 0-10-0. The Cougars dropped their WAC opener at UMKC last week, 6-0. Sophomore forward Jyllian Coggins has scored the lone goal of the season for the Cougars.
