LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Despite three first-half goals, Utah Valley University women's soccer found itself on the wrong end of a 4-3 overtime match at UNLV on Friday at Johann Field.
Ahead 3-2 at the half, a second-half penalty kick and a golden goal in the 100th minute ended the Wolverines' (3-2-0) three-match winning streak.
"There are a lot of things I really liked about that match," UVU head coach
Brent Anderson said. "I think that for about 75 minutes we stuck to our game plan and it was working against a very good opponent. Ultimately, we were undone by a loss of focus. Our attack is creating some excellent scoring opportunities, but on the defensive side we were just a bit unorganized at key moments and UNLV was able to capitalize."
Trailing 1-0 after an eighth minute goal from the Rebels (3-2-0),
Sydney Fitzpatrick scored her first goal of the season just 29 seconds later. On a through ball from
Breanna McCarter, Fitzpatrick beat the keeper and the defender to the ball at the top of the box on her first touch and then scored with her left foot.
Sheridan Fox gave the Wolverines the lead in the 25th minute, scoring for the third time in the last two matches and fourth time on the year. Fox scored in a similar fashion as Fitzpatrick, using her first touch to set up a shot with her left foot into the lower right corner.
Tied at 2-2 after Jodi Barber tied the game for UNLV in the 27th minute,
Jamie Brown was the on the scoring end of a
Sara Callister pass right in front of the goal, putting away her third goal of the season.
Kasandra Anderson also had an assist on the play; the senior had two assists in the game, which gives her five for the season.
After the break, Chidera Akubuilo converted a game-tying PK in the 71st minute, ultimately forcing the game into overtime. Denali Murnan then scored the golden goal on a header with just over 30 seconds left in the first overtime to end the match.
The Wolverines will now make the short trip north to Cedar City, where they'll face in-state rival Southern Utah, 2-1 winners over Dixie State on Thursday.
