OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University registered three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 win over CSU Bakersfield in the WAC home opener for the Wolverines on Thursday at Clyde Field.
Â
Gui Leme,
Paul Hoffmeister and
Aaron Meyer each scored for UVU (8-3-0, 1-1-0). It was the team's sixth shutout of the season and the first for junior goalkeeper
Mitch Jensen, who was making his first career start for the Wolverines. Utah Valley is currently ranked 24th in the country by both TopDrawerSoccer.com and College Soccer News.
Â
"We've spent four of the last five weeks on the road and that's really taken its toll in a lot of different areas," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "Returning back home is great for the players. We love this pitch, we love our fans and we had a great week of training that got us ready for this match tonight." Â
Â
Leme started the scoring in the 14th minute when he pressured the keeper and stole both the ball, and the first goal, of the game for his second goal of the season.
Â
"We put good pressure on their back line and were hunting for that bad touch or that bad pass and Gui certainly broke the ice for us and got things started. From that point we settled down and were very good with the ball," Maas said.
Â
The Wolverines' second goal game on a give-and-go from Hoffmeister to
Karson Payton in the far corner, who served it into the box for a Hoffmeister header just inside the near post. The goal came in the 29th minute and was Hoffmeister's team-leading fifth goal of the season on Payton's team-high fifth assist.
Â
UVU made it 3-0 in the 31st minute after Leme was fouled in the box and Meyer converted on the penalty kick for his second goal of the year. The Wolverines limited the Roadrunners (2-9-0, 0-3-0) to six shots with just one coming on goal.
