WOLVERINES HOSTING WAC TOURNAMENT, PLAY IN SEMIFINAL FRIDAY
After securing its first Western Athletic Conference regular season title last week, No. 21/23 Utah Valley University opens its bid for a first WAC Tournament title in a semifinal match on Friday at 6 p.m. at Clyde Field in Orem. The top-seeded Wolverines (15-3-1) will face either No. 4 seed UNLV, 3-2 winners over UT Rio Grande Valley on Thursday night.
"It's an honor to host the WAC Tournament, and we're looking forward to playing at home in front of our 12th Wolverines," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas.
UVU enters the WAC Tournament unbeaten in its last nine matches and is 8-0-1 during that time. Last Saturday, the Wolverines clinched the regular season title with Air Force's win over Seattle U in an afternoon contest. UVU was in San Antonio, prepping to face Incarnate Word, when the championship was clinched. The Wolverines fell behind 2-0 before an
Aaron Meyer PK and a
Paul Hoffmeister goal helped earn the draw.
On Wednesday night, the WAC held a pre-tournament banquet with the six qualifying teams in attendance. The postseason All-WAC teams were announced with six Utah Valley players receiving All-WAC honors.
Alex Neff made his third straight first-team appearance while
Paul Hoffmeister,
Mitch Jensen, and
Skyler Milne joined him on the first team.
Aaron Meyer and
Karson Payton were both on the second team. Head coach
Greg Maas was named WAC Coach of the Year for the first time after leading the Wolverines to their first league championship.
