UVU draws in finale, clinches first WAC title

2016 WAC Tournament Bracket

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – After securing the WAC championship earlier in the day, Utah Valley University played Incarnate Word to a 2-2 draw in the regular season finale on Saturday night in the Lone Star State. The Wolverines (15-3-1, 8-1-1) clinched their first WAC regular season title by virtue of Seattle U's loss at Air Force on Saturday afternoon.

"That's what these guys train for. I always say you need invest in your own karma and need a little bit of luck, and we've certainly done that throughout the year," said UVU head coach Greg Maas. "To be WAC regular season champions is certainly something special that we'll enjoy today and for some time to come."

The Wolverines will play in the WAC Tournament semifinals play next Friday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. MT at Clyde Field against either UNLV or the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

UVU trailed 2-0 until a 64th-minute penalty kick by Aaron Meyer made it 2-1. It was Meyer's third goal of the season. Paul Hoffmeister got the equalizer in the 79th minute, putting back a saved shot by Aaron Caprio for his ninth goal of the season.

Ben Conway scored both goals for Incarnate Word (4-9-4, 2-5-3), both on free kicks, to give the Cardinals the 2-0 lead. The first goal came in the 12th minute with the second goal in the 55th minute. Utah Valley clawed its way back to earn the draw and a point, giving the Wolverines 25 points on the WAC season. The overtime contest was the first time Utah Valley has played extra time this season.

"Today was going to be a tough match. With a lot of emotion this afternoon we knew it was going to be a game that we were going to have to manage," Maas said. "We made it difficult with a couple of silly fouls in dangerous areas and they took advantage. For us to come from 2-0 down and equalize the game--and really have the better of the chances--shows the resiliency and the tenacity of this group."

The opposite half of the WAC Tournament bracket features No. 3 Air Force against No. 6 CSU Bakersfield next Thursday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. MT. UNLV and UT Rio Grande Valley follow on Thursday at 6 p.m. MT.  No. 2 Seattle U will face the Air Force/CSUB winner on Friday at 3 p.m. MT. The tournament championship will be Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. MT.
