Brandon Randolph recorded a 20-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist triple-double to lead the Utah Valley University men's basketball team to a 113-87 win over Division II foe Western State in an exhibition contest on Monday night at the UCCU Center.

The game marked the final tune-up for the Wolverines before the team officially opens the season on Friday night at nationally-ranked Gonzaga.

"It's good to get that one out the way," said Utah Valley head coach
Mark Pope. "Western State did a great job, played hard, made shots and ran their stuff. They are a good team. I felt like our guys played hard but we have to clean so much up. That's to be expected though. I'm really excited about this team. I feel like we have a lot of potential and that we're going to be really good at the end of the season."

Tied 7-7 at the 16:53 mark of the first half, Utah Valley used a 24-5 run over the next six minutes to jump out to a 33-12 lead halfway through the opening period. Western State bounced back with a 13-2 run to cut the UVU lead to a 44-36 advantage with four minutes remaining. The two teams played even the remainder of the half as UVU took a 53-44 lead into the break.

Utah Valley went on an 11-2 run early in the second half to take a 71-54 lead with 14:45 to play. Western State cut the UVU lead to just nine points at the 12:33 mark before the Wolverines used a 20-6 run to up its lead to 26 points, 95-69, with just under seven minutes to play. Utah Valley held on to its lead to secure the 113-87 win.

Randolph scored his game-high 20 points on a 6-of-9 clip from the field, including a 3-of-9 mark from beyond the arc. He also knocked down 7-of-9 free throws. The junior guard had two steals to go along with his 10 assists and 10 rebounds.

Conner Toolson and
Jared Stutzman each added 15 points. Toolson knocked down 6-of-14 shots from the field, including three shots from long range. The sophomore guard also tallied a team-high three steals. Stuzman hit 5-of-9 shots on the night with four three-pointers. He also pulled down five rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.

Isaac Neilson and
Kenneth Ogbe had 12 points, while
Zach Nelson helped with 11.
Ivory Young was also in double figures with 10 points.Â

Utah Valley connected on 50 percent (39-of-78) of its shots on the night, including a 37.2 percent (16-of-43) clip from beyond the arc. Western State shot 42.9 percent (27-of-63) from the field with a 45.5 percent (10-of-22) mark from three-point range.

Will Duggan led Western State with a team-high 16 points.

Utah Valley officially opens its 2016-17 season at nationally-ranked Gonzaga on Friday night at the McCarthey Athletic Center (Kennel) in Spokane. Tipp-off is set for 7 p.m. (MST). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 960 AM radio with Jim McCulloch handling the play-by-play duties. The game will also be broadcast on ROOT Sports NW.
