Gordon double-double guides UVU past Antelope Valley

OREM, Utah – Junior guard Taylor Gordon tallied a double-double with a career-high tying 23 points and 11 rebounds to help Utah Valley women's basketball cruise to an 87-47 win over Antelope Valley Thursday afternoon at the UCCU Center.

Gordon, who notched her third double-double of the year, also made a career-high 12 free throws and added a career-best tying six assists to go along with four steals for the Wolverines (4-10). Her 23 points tied for the most by any UVU player in a game this year and helped the squad score a season high in points.

"Taylor had a great game," said Utah Valley head coach Cathy Nixon. "She's been a superstar in practice and I loved how she crashed the boards. She is really kind of a catalyst for us on the floor."

In addition to Gordon's outburst, UVU finished with three other starters in double figures on the offensive end. Following Gordon in double digits was junior Mariah Seals with 19 points, junior Sam Lubcke with 15 points and freshman Leya Harvey, who set a new career high with 12 points.

"I thought it was a great game to test our mental toughness. We were lacking depth a little bit and I feel like the girls stepped up with four players in double figures," Nixon said.

Trailing 11-6, UVU closed out the first quarter on an 8-2 run to take its first lead of the game which it never relinquished the rest of the way. Harvey and Jordan Holland each finished a pair of layups to give the Wolverines a 14-13 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Wolverines went on another quarter-ending run, 14-5, heading into the halftime break.  Gordon and Seals led the quarter-ending charge with four points apiece to give Utah Valley a 37-27 lead after two periods.

Utah Valley ran away with the game with a 14-4 run to end the third quarter and enter the fourth with a 22-point lead. Seals and Gordon each added five points to lead another quarter-ending surge, as the Wolverines sped to its largest margin of victory this season.

Along with its scoring surge, Utah Valley tallied a season-high 20 assists on the day. Seals, who had at least five assists for the 10th time this season, led all Wolverines with seven assists and was followed by Gordon with six helpers.

"We found open shooters and we got open shots that we knocked down. It's always good to play against a team like that, who plays a little bit crazy and chaotic style of basketball," said Gordon.

UVU also made a season-best 29 shots from the field (29-of-63 FG) against Antelope Valley, while knocking down a season-high 24 free throws as well. The Wolverines held a 24-4 advantage in made free throws in the game.

Outside of passing and shooting, the Wolverines controlled the glass to finish the contest with a 52-25 advantage in rebounds. Gordon's 11 boards marked the team-high and Lubcke's nine paved the way for UVU's highest rebounding total in a game this season.

The Wolverines will now conclude their non-conference schedule at home versus in-state foe Dixie State on Saturday, Dec. 31. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside the PE Gym.
