OREM, Utah—Mariah Seals scored a game-high 19 points and
Sam Lubcke registered a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead the Utah Valley women's basketball team to a 72-58 win over Denver on Friday night at Lockhart Arena.
Lubcke's 12 boards gave the 6-1 center a new career high, while she extended her double-digit scoring streak to six games. Seals extended the same streak to 11 games and had at least five assists for the eighth straight game to help UVU (3-8) win its second game in a row.
"I think it was a really good team effort and I'm really happy with how we played as a team," said Lubcke. "When we worked hard on defense it made it easier on offense, so that's been our mindset throughout this week. It's definitely paying off because we've now won the last two games."
Utah Valley jumped out to a quick 5-0 advantage and held on to the lead throughout the entire first period, taking a 14-11 lead into the second period. With UVU leading 19-12 at the 6:27 mark of the second period, Denver (3-7) went on a 16-1 run over a 4:20 span to take a 28-20 lead with 1:41 remaining in the half.
The Wolverines then finished the half on a 6-0 run to go into the break trailing by just two points, 28-26. Seals added a layup and set up
Jordan Holland for another to spark the run.
At the beginning of the third quarter, UVU extended its scoring surge to 11-0 and took a lead which it never relinquished the rest of the way. Lubcke gave the resurging Wolverines a third-quarter boost with a bucket in the paint and then drew a group of Denver defenders down low before finding
Britta Hall in the corner for the go-ahead three-pointer, 31-28.
With only a four-point lead in the game's final three minutes, the Wolverines again went on a run, 10-0, to seal their third victory of the year. Seals had six points in the final stretch on a jumper and four free throws and Hall hit a pair of foul shots as well.
Free throws proved crucial in the game, as Utah Valley hit 17 shots from the charity strip compared to two for the Pioneers.
Along with the big games from Lubcke and Seals, freshman guard
Keana Delos Santos added 11 points her best performance since becoming a Wolverine. Delos Santos converted all of her shots from long range, going 3-of-3 from behind the three-point line and drained a couple of free throws.
Utah Valley now heads out on the road to take on in-state foe Utah State on Dec. 15 in Logan. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (MST).
