CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – A five-run fifth inning helped propel Utah Valley University to a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Binghamton in the Mary Nutter Classic finale Sunday morning at the Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City, California.

Morgan Smith and Brittney Vansway delivered the big hits in the inning, as Smith came through with a clutch two-RBI triple while Vansway clubbed out a go-ahead two-run home run to center to put the Wolverines (4-6) on top for good.

"I was really proud of the way that our girls continued to make adjustments and fight at the plate. Their starter threw a great game, but we were able to dig in and find our swings," head coach Nikki Palmer said. "Overall I was proud of the girls for going 3-2 this weekend. We were able to learn a lot about ourselves and improve game-to-game so it was a good trip."

The senior speedster Smith also made history in the game, as she became the program's all-time leader in stolen bases by swiping her fourth steal of the season in the third inning. Smith, who also holds the school record for all-time triples with 11, recorded the 41st stolen bag of her career to pass Meghan Yocom's (2008-2011) previous UVU record of 40. Smith is now 41-for-47 for her career in stolen bases.

"Morgan is on fire right now," Palmer added. "She is a very talented athlete and excellent leader. We are very lucky to have her."

Trailing 3-0 in the fifth, the Utah Valley offense broke through with five runs in the frame to take a 5-3 lead. With two on and one out, Smith pulled a triple into the right field corner to score both Breezy Roth and Dana De La Torre to make it a one run game. Moments later, Tiani Hensley tied the game with an RBI single to center. Following a strike out, Vansway then blasted out her team leading third home run of the season to cap the scoring.

With UVU still holding to the 5-3 lead in the seventh, BU (2-3) made things interesting by getting a pair of runners into scoring position with just one away. Following a groundout that made it a one-run game at 5-4 and put the tying run on third base, Bailey Moore shut the door on the Bearcat offense by striking out Tia Smith looking to earn her first save of the season.

Kellee Ramsey (1-1) went five strong innings in the circle in her first start of 2016 to earn the victory. The sophomore right-hander allowed just two earned runs, as she scattered eight hits and struck out one en route to the win. Moore then recorded her first save of the season by pitching the final two innings of solid relief. The junior gave up just one hit and one run over the final two innings to earn the save.

Smith, Hensley and Vansway delivered the lone hits of the game for UVU, as Smith and Hensley each went 1-for-2 while Vansway finished 1-for-3.

With the win, UVU finished going 3-2 at the Mary Nutter Classic with the win over Binghamton as well as an 11-1 victory over George Washington and an 11-3 run-rule win over Bethune-Cookman.

The Wolverines will now prepare to head to Honolulu, Hawai'i next weekend (Feb. 26-28) to take part at the Hawai'i Invitational. There, UVU will face the host Rainbow Wahine three times as well as Portland State three more.
