OREM, Utah—Fresh off a pair of wins over Chicago State and UMKC last week, the Utah Valley University men's basketball team continues WAC play on Saturday as the Wolverines head out on their final regular season road trip of the year to take on Seattle U at Key Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT
Â
Utah Valley enters Saturday's matchup against the Redhawks with a 12-15 overall record. The Wolverines swept a pair of home games against Chicago State and UMKC last week to improve to 6-6 in league play. UVU is tied with Seattle U for the fourth spot in the WAC standings.
Â
"This is a really big game," said Utah Valley head coach
Mark Pope. "Seattle U is our worst matchup in this league. The things they do are really hard for us and it's a huge challenge for us. Their size is a monstrous challenge for us, especially with us losing Darrious (Hamilton). The last time we played them it was like we were stuck in molasses. We couldn't get any pace or advantage to the game. So we have a lot of work to do."
Â
Konner Frey recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while
Dayon Goodman scored a career-high 17 points to help Utah Valley overcome a 20-point deficit and defeat UMKC on Saturday night at the UCCU Center.
Marcel Davis helped with 18 points, six rebounds and six assists, while
Jaden Jackson was also in double figures with 15 points.
Â
Utah Valley has three of the top seven scorers in the WAC. Jackson continues to front the Wolverines in scoring at 14.6 points per game. Frey and Davis are also averaging double figures at 14.2 points and 14.0 points, respectively. Frey fronts the team on the boards at 7.0 rebounds a game. Davis leads the team in assists, dishing out 4.96 a contest.
Â
Seattle U heads into Saturday's game with a 12-14 overall record. The Redhawks are 6-6 in WAC play after dropping a pair of road games at UTRGV and New Mexico State last week. The Redhawks have dropped three straight dating back to a 71-60 loss at home to Grand Canyon on Feb. 12.
Â
Junior guard Brendan Westendorf led Seattle U with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Jadon Cohee scored 13 points off the bench in a 70-57 setback at league leader New Mexico State in SU's last game Saturday night at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M. Jack Crook was also in double digits with 12 points. Westendorf leads the Redhawks in scoring at 11.9 points a game. Crook also averages double figures at 10.2 points a contest.
Â
Cameron Dollar is in his seventh season as the head coach of the Redhawks. He holds a 91-118 record in his time at SU.
Â
Saturday's matchup with the Redhawks marks the 12th time the two teams have met on the basketball hardwood. SU holds an all-time 6-5 advantage in the series. The two teams split last year's WAC series with each team winning on its home floor. Seattle U has won two straight over UVU, including the matchup in Orem on Jan. 28. SU holds an all time 3-2 advantage over UVU in games played in Seattle.
Â
Saturday's game against Seattle U will be broadcast live on ESPN 960 AM radio with Jim McCulloch handling the play-by-play duties.
