UVU adds Akron transfer Rubio, local star Leme

OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University men's soccer head coach Greg Maas has announced the addition of University of Akron transfer Elliott Rubio as well as former RSL Academy product Gui Leme to the 2016 roster.

Rubio, a 6-5, 210-pound goalkeeper, will be a redshirt sophomore this fall after spending two seasons in Ohio with the Zips. He is a product of the Chicago Magic PSG of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy where he was the starting keeper for the U18 team.

"Elliott Rubio is a determined, experienced, and physically imposing goalkeeper," Maas said. "As the No. 2 at Akron, one of the most respected programs in the nation, Elliott is extremely focused and ready to embrace the competition for the No. 1 position here at UVU. His experience in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy with Chicago Magic PSG, and at Akron, will allow Elliott to fit seamlessly into our style of play and the championship goals set out for our program."

He redshirted in 2014 and served as the backup for the 2015 Akron team that advanced to the College Cup before falling in penalty kicks to eventual National Champion Stanford.

Leme hails from Sao Paulo, Brazil and will begin his freshman season this fall. He was in the Real Salt Lake Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona and also played for Sparta United SC.

"Gui is unquestionably one of the most technically gifted and impactful players in the game." Maas said. "He has the ability to change games in an instant, and he will bring a level of creativity and soccer-savvy to our program that will be a perfect fit to the winning tradition here with UVU men's soccer."

Leme was part of two club state championships with Sparta United and was also the Utah High School 5A MVP after leading Lehi High School to a state title in 2013. He also spent time in the US Youth Soccer Region IV Olympic Development Program (ODP) with the Region IV ODP '96 Team and was a two-time ODP Interregional '96 All-Star Team selection.
