OREM, Utah – Junior setter
Sierra Starley's triple-double helped lead the White team to a tightly contested five-set victory over the Green team in Utah Valley University's annual Green & White scrimmage on Wednesday evening in Orem (25-12, 19-25, 27-25, 28-26, 11-15).
Starley led the way with 26 assists, 15 kills and 15 digs. She also added a trio of aces en route to helping her squad pull out the victory. Senior outside hitter
Kiahna Vernon was next with 14 kill and 12 digs, while junior outside hitter
Lexi Thompson added 13 kills and preseason all-conference selection
Madison Dennison (junior middle blocker) chipped in 10.
Newcomers
Brighton Taylor (junior middle blocker) and
Madi Wardle (freshman setter), as well as senior setter
Kelcee Munk all had nice outings for the Green squad, as they each recorded double-doubles with 12 kills and 15 blocks, 32 assists and 13 digs, and 27 assists and 13 digs, respectively.
"I saw some good things tonight, as well as some not so good things. Our job is now for us to be able to work on those things so that we can reach the consistency that we need," head coach
Sam Atoa said. "Overall I was very encouraged with a number of things that I saw."
All 16 Wolverines saw action in the contest and the majority of players traded back-and-forth between playing for both teams during the exhibition match.
UVU will officially begin its 2016 season on Friday night at neighboring rival BYU when the Wolverines and 13th-ranked Cougars do battle at 7 p.m. at the Smith Fieldhouse in Provo. The contest will mark the first of three matches for Utah Valley on the weekend, as the Wolverines will also face Cal Poly (10 a.m.) and Rice (5 p.m.) on Saturday as part of the season-opening BYU Invitational. UVU will then return to Orem on Tuesday, Aug. 30 for its home opener against Idaho State.
