WOLVERINES HOME TO HOST #20 GONZAGA AND CSUN
After playing four straight games away from home, No. 19 Utah Valley University returns to Clyde Field for a contest against unbeaten, No. 20 Gonzaga in a match that starts at 5 p.m. MT on Thursday night. The Wolverines also host CSUN on Saturday at 7 p.m. MT, with both matches taking place during UVU's Homecoming Week and its 75th anniversary celebration.
Thursday's match is just the second home game of the season for Utah Valley and, like the season opener, pits a pair of ranked foes against one another. Then-No. 25 UVU defeated No. 21 Washington, 2-1, on Aug. 26. The Wolverines are 2-1-1 all-time against ranked opponents at home and 2-4-2 overall against ranked teams.
"After two long weeks on the road, it's nice to finally be playing at home in front of our 12th Wolverines," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "Gonzaga is off to a great start, they're in the Top 20, and Northridge will be rested having only one match this week. That said, the boys are highly motivated and look forward to two great match-ups during Homecoming Week."
UVU split two games last week, falling to Loyola Chicago, 2-0, before a 3-0 win at Northern Illinois. In suffering their first loss, the Wolverines dropped in the rankings while still unbeaten Loyola jumped into the NSCAA poll at No. 18. In the win at NIU,
Karson Payton,
Alex Neff and
Aaron Caprio each scored while
Skyler Milne had two assists while
Aaron Meyer and Payton also assisted on goals.
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
In addition to its No. 20 ranking in the NSCAA poll, Gonzaga (5-0-1) is ranked 19th by Soccer America, 21st by TopDrawerSoccer.com and No. 23 by College Soccer News. After opening the season with a 1-1 draw at home against Bradley, the Bulldogs have reeled off five straight wins including a 4-2 victory over then-No. 16 Seattle U. Utah Valley holds a 2-0-0 advantage in the all-time series, winning 2-0 at home during the Wolverines' inaugural season and 1-0 at Gonzaga last season. UVU is 3-0-0 all-time against teams from the West Coast Conference.
ABOUT THE MATADORS
CSUN fell 4-0 to No. 7 UCLA on Monday night dropping the Matadors to 2-3-0 on the season. CSUN's schedule includes a 2-1 win over WAC affiliate member Air Force in a game played in Albuquerque. Saturday's match wraps up a string of five straight away from home for the Matadors, who hail from the Big West Conference. Utah Valley is 2-1-0 all-time against teams out of the Big West.
COMING UP
Utah Valley travels to Northern California for two contests next week. The Wolverines play at Sacramento State on Thursday, Sept. 22 and at UC Davis on Saturday, Sept. 24. Next week's action wraps up the non-conference schedule with WAC play beginning on Friday, Sept. 30 at defending champion Seattle U.
