PEORIA, Ill. – Skyler Milne and
Paul Hoffmeister scored two goals apiece as No. 18 Utah Valley University improved to 2-0-0 with a 4-2 win over Evansville on Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The game took place on the campus of Bradley University at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic.
Â
It was the second brace in as many games for Hoffmeister, who also notched his second game-winner of the year. For Milne, it's the second time he's scored multiple goals in a game in his career including last season's hat trick against San José State.
Â
"We started sharp with a fantastic early goal, but we relaxed and allowed them back in the match," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "That said, our boys responded each time with a goal of our own to maintain a two goal advantage."
Â
Utah Valley (2-0-0) wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead. Just 66 seconds into the contest Milne scored from 12 yards out on assists from
Matt Gay and
Gui Leme.
Â
Ian McGrath tied the game in the at the 17-minute mark of the first half, scoring his first goal of the season on an assist by Ryan Koenig. McGrath scored both goals for the Aces (1-2-0) for a brace of his own.
Â
Less than three minutes later, on a corner kick from
Aaron Meyer, Milne soared above the defense for a header past the diving keeper for his second goal. That gave UVU a 2-1 lead it would carry into the break.
Â
Hoffmeister extended the Utah Valley lead to 3-1 in the 53rd minute, scoring from 18 yards out on a
Nic Harguindeguy assist. Again the Aces answered and again it was McGrath, in the 55th minute, to make it a 3-2 contest.
Â
UVU extended it to 4-2 in the 60th minute with Milne and Meyer connecting with Hoffmeister for the junior midfielder, who scored from 12 yards out. Meyer, who finished fifth in the country with 12 assists as a freshman in 2015, had two assists on the day.
Â
"I continue to be impressed by our team's resiliency, and both Milne and Hoffmeister were clinical in front of goal each earning a brace," Maas said.
Â
Leme's assist was his second of the season while Gay and Harguindeguy both recorded their first points of the season with an assist.
Â
The Wolverines now prepare to face host Bradley on Sunday at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT in a game that will air live on ESPN3.
