OREM, Utah – An 86th-minute goal by
Paul Hoffmeister helped Utah Valley University to a 2-1 win over UMKC on Thursday night at Clyde Field, snapping the Wolverines' recent skid. UVU (4-8-1, 1-3-1) picked up three needed points while ending a streak of three straight losses and eight consecutive games without a win.
"It's an incredible relief for this team," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. The boys have been working so hard and have been so committed. Our effort today was different and I saw that focus in training. This win was a real credit to these guys...they dug in and got the victory. Tonight was a great result for us and it can give us a lot of momentum moving forward."
Hoffmeister's goal, his third of the season, came on a rebound off of a header by
Alec Felix that was saved my UMKC (4-5-3, 2-2-0) goalkeeper Filippo Errico. The ball bounced high on Errico's save and Hoffmeister went and got it, using his left foot from five yards out to score the game-winner.
The Wolverines took an early lead, just seven minutes in, when a scramble in front of the goal resulted in a
Connor Salmon score.
Gui Leme had a shot blocked, followed by a Salmon shot that hit the left post before the senior midfielder notched his second goal of the season, beating Errico to the ball for the 1-0 lead.
The Kangaroos (4-5-3, 2-2-0) tied the match in the 40th minute when Antoine Precheur rebounded a saved shot by Christian Anderaos. The goal for Precheur was his third of the season.
Utah Valley was credited with 16 shots, eight on goal, while the 'Roos finished with eight shots, six that were on frame.
